And climbing on the roof to scan the garden from on high.

This was a good year at Shangri La Habra, palm growth wise, overall.

Here are crowns the Archontophoenix purpurea on the left and the "watermelon" Chambeyronea hookeri on the right.

Here's a pair of Caryota ochlandra. Much smaller than C. urens, fuzzy and magnificent.

Here's the C. urens towering in the background. The first pic below gives a dramatic idea of size; those feather palms are some of the Orgiastic Horde of A. Tuckeri that begat barrels of seed this summer. The tuckeri are about 25 - 30 feet tall.

Here's a view into the jungle. That's Muttley (aka Happy Hurricane Hyrbid) just right of center. Giant C. urens on the left.

There's a lot of other stuff in there; Rhopie baueri and sapida, Pritchardtia lanaiensis, and the Big Buteagrus, plus a flock of A. tucker and a Cocothrinax spp in lower left.

This is a Dypsis leptocheilos gifted to me in 2006. That fan palm at the base is a Pritchardtia munroi from Jungle Music.

Here's the area around the trunk of Spanky, the big Roystonea regia. Barely visible is a Dypsis "super decipiens" planted the year after Spanky was, as a large 7-gallon. Spanky went in as a 2-gallon in October 2004.

Back in the old days when people were more in tune to the natures rhythms, it was customary for many cultures in the northern hemisphere to celebrate the winter solstice as it marked the resurrection of the sun as it begins to move higher in the sky bringing life giving warmth.
