Some data about my climate

Featured Replies

Here I leave some data about my climate. I have recently started my passion for growing palms and I would like to know your opinion about my growing conditions.  As I read, my USDA hardiness zone would be 8b.

Related with the botany, the area where I live have a mix between Altantic and Continental/Mediterranean species such as chestnut (Castanea sativa) and maples (Acer sp.) for the former and holm and corck oaks (Quercus ilex and Quercus suber) for the latter. In gardening, the most used palm is Trachycarpus fortunei. Phoenix canariensis, some Washies and Chamaerops can be found.

About Agriculture, its an area with vineyards and fruit trees as apple and pear woods. Also pepper crops and chestnut harvesting are typical in my area.

Your climate isn't so bad. Does Phoenix canariensis reach full size with palm more 50 years old?

This is one of the most biggest you can find in my area (the foto is old, right know have perfect  green fronds). I don't know how old it is.

Anyway you should grow many species of palms. A list may be long to write. Start to grown Butia, Sabal, Brahea. Such genera are bullet proof.

Thanks for your encouragement. I have just received seeds of:

- Washingtonia filifera

- Jubaea chilensis

- Brahea armata

- Parajubaea torallyi var. microcarpa (I have to search info about germinating this one which it's said to be very difficult to germinate).

In the future I would like to experiment with Ceroxylon quindiuense.

Brahea edulis is also hardy and much more fast grower than armata. Anyway you may find in Spain many wonderfull sp.
