Help! What's going on with my palm?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I hope someone can help me, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong with my palm. Reading the forum I wonder if Ive watered too much - my plant pot doesn't have any drainage, it is fitted with an auto watering gadget which I think leaves space for the water to collect at the bottom. That said I havent watered in ages and it's not got any better. The top soil is bone dry, when I pull the auto water gadget out its wet at the bottom.

Many of the branches have wilted to one side and the leaves are going brown and crispy, some with white spots. The branches that are still standing have black/brown tips at the end of the leaves.

Thanks for any help.

Looks like it sitting in water. Rot starts setting in and palms die. It's best to add a drain hole. When watering house palms I soak the soil real good then let it drain. Then I wait till it's about dry. The longer they're in pots the more often they will need water.

Welcome to the forum! I'm sure others will chime in shortly.

Welcome to PalmTalk. Palms must have excellent drainage - putting one in a pot with no drain holes is torture. The roots are probably rotting. Without healthy roots the rest of the plant dies. Remove palm from its torture chamber. Rinse off the potting mix and inspect roots. Healthy roots are white. Brown/black roots indicate rot. Trim off rot and stand palm in a container and pour in hydrogen peroxide so roots are covered. H2O2 disinfects dead/dying tissue without attacking healthy tissue. Let palm soak for an hour or so.

Discard old potting soil. Throw away torture chamber and buy pot with proper drain holes. If you can't bear to do that, scrub chamber with hot soapy water to clean/disinfect. Then drill 2cm holes in bottom. Repot palm in fresh well-draining potting mix. Keep palm on dry side until it decides whether to live or die. Never let palm sit in a tray of water.

Or buy replacement palm and start with paragraph 2
