Thanks again for the coconut Jeff!

It's enjoying the morning sun right now. We are supposed to be cooling down to about 85ish degrees now so I'm thinking it'll be fine for about half day sun right? I wouldn't want for it to get sun burn. I'll keep my eyes on it. If it's doing well in a few weeks I'll move it over to where it can get more sun and heat throughout the day.

It's actually a bit more convenient without the nut attached to it. It fit perfectly in that small container. I guess it'll be an easy plant to move around indoors during winter. :greenthumb:

Watch for the roots - it will send long roots way down, and a small pot is not an advantage. Mine sent a long root about 8 inches out of the bottom of the pot in search for water. It was pretty thick, about 1/2" diameter. The root system is adapted to having dry conditions at the top of the soil, but the roots go fishing for water down below (imagine a tropical island where it's all dry sand above but there's groundwater available deeper).

Hello, Thank you Mr. Coconut Palm.

For now it is still alive and growing. I agree with the radiation and/or refrigerating... there is unfortuneately not much we can do about that. Anyway I am not going to try again before next spring (this is too cold here alreday).
At least this one sprout so the embryo was alive. It is interesting to compare our success rate. 4 (or 5) out of a hundred is like 1 out of 20 (or 25).
I will keep you posted on the progression.

We are starting the "bad" season here, Even got some snow today. I have 2 other coconuts. One bought in a Home Depot in early April this year, with several leaves already (it is doink OK for now, but there is another 5 months indoors to get through). The second one is from a sprouted nut  I found in a dump while on vacation in  Puerto Vallarta (Mexico) ... This one is also slowly adapting.

Hi again! Almost  a year later ;)

Home depot coconut and puerto vallarta collected nut had a great winter in thei cozy Montreal flat !

I have attached 2 pictures. They are spending the summer outside (warm enough and high humidex). First one is home dépôt, second is PV (this one is making adult leaves already !? It made 5 bifids only). The second picture was taken in its winter room, 3 weeks ago.

What are you growing them in? Looks like pure charcoal or is that just a top dressing? They look healthy whatever you are doing.

Hi everyone,

I am new on the forum, thanks for adding me! I live in Quebec, Canada. I grow a bunch of palm trees that enjoy our great summer outdoor and go back inside as soon as winter comes back (mid October usually) :)

I have tried to sprout coconuts (10 attempts) that I buy from the grocery store for the past 6 months but none will sprout: they all rot! I have designed an "incubator" that gave me a 100% succes in sprouting and growing diverse Areca palms (catechu, macrocalyx and vesti). So I believe that it should work with the coconuts as well. I have tried several ways (plastic bags, terra cota pots with sand or soil....)

Has anyone any recommendation as for the origin of the coconut I should buy (Dominican Republic, Malaysia, Thailand, New Guinea...)

I really want to succeed (in sprouting them)!

Many thanks!

I have attached a photo of my Areca catechu that I am proud of :-)

Keep trying :)

It is all about finding à viable nut because for most of them, the embryo is dead :/

Then heat heat heat and some humidity!

Thank you Neil :)

The charcoal is mostly à topping. There is a little proportion within the soil mixture. I find that a dark topping helps getting the heat in summer and it keep ot à few hoirs at night... I am in Canada, à little help  doesn't hurt!!

I water them very little (very!) and whenever they forecast rain shoers, I move them back jnside if the température is expected below 18C for more than 24h... Again... Canada !
