lol, two good lookin' dudes!  Looks like you guys had a good time....

Hey Bobby, we'd all like to know if the wife liked the Carolina's, and is now up for a move South?  (If you can

do that with Long Island, we can't wait for the new place!)

Hey Everyone.....

We just got back.... I'll be posting a bunch of pics in a bit.... Let me tell you that Charleston,SC is a REAL Palmy place... I can't believe how much stuff grows there..(CIDPs, Washies, Trachies, Sabals, etc)... That just might be our new home....

Yeah Charleston is very palmy, especially if you come from a place where seeing palms planted out in random places is rare (Like here and NYC too). Glad you enjoyed Charleston. What other places did you see in the Carolinas?

Hi Bobby,

Did you find some land?  Charleston is a great town.

I may be back in your neck of the woods in a few weeks.

Hey Zac,

our Itinerary was: RALEIGH/1-day, CHARLOTTE/2-days, CHARLESTON/2-days, MYRTLE BEACH/1-day...

Charleston was, by far, my favorite for the foliage, also love Charlotte - but no palms :( .... Raleigh really didn't impress me - but was only there for a day.... Myrtle Beach was cool - but too much neon like Atlantic City.  I'm in the process of convincing my wife to check out St. Augustine.. then we'll probably make a decision. It'll probably take us some time to sell anyway....

Let me know when, Ray....  We'll definitely hang out... If you're here on the 12th, we're having a luau at the house - would love to have ya.

The Trachies in Charlotte are in the Myers Park neighborhood.  They are kinda hard to find. You really have to know where to look, but once you see them, they take your breath away.  Yeah Raleigh is kinda blah. Charleston is nice. Myrtle Beach is ok. Did you go to the Pavilion while you were in Myrtle? This is the last season before it gets turned into condos. :(

I flew over the SC coast on a flight from Melbourne to NYC a year ago.  The amount of new development was surprising.

I don't recall seeing any palms, except maybe a Sabal minor or two in Chapel Hill or Raleigh when I was a student 30 year ago.

Fla. climate center: 100-119 days>85 F

Central Orlando's urban heat island may be warmer than us

Oh Dave- Where did you go to school? Are you a rival or a fellow alumn? There are quite a number of Trachies and Sabals in Raleigh, some of which would have been there back then.

Zac,

I picked up a 10-gal Trachy in Charlotte (in the Lake Wiley area) from a guy named Sean (Chillypalmtree.org).. He is awesome... He's got the most beautiful Trachies & Sabals I've ever seen... He has 3 trachies planted in the back of his house that are like 25ft tall and absolutely beautiful... I spent about an hour there and would've stayed longer if the wifey wasn't complaining that we were on vacation and it wasn't just about palms.... lol.. He told me that he gets colder than We do here in NY and these trachies just keep growing & growing... So I'm gonna plant this one in the ground now, protect it for the first year from temps below 25f and then let it brave the elements next year and see what happens.. He said it'll put on about a foot of trunk/year...

If you got it from Sean, he got it from Gary in New Bern, NC. His webpage is www.garysnursery.com I know Gary and he grows some great palms. He does retail sales from his place, so the next trip you take to the Carolinas, make sure you leave a day to spend with him.

Actually, Sean grows all his own.... He's got a pretty big selection there.... I'll be posting pics on a new thread. But I do wanna get down to see Gary - he was just a little out of the way from our itinerary.
