Hello all,

I wanted to introduce myself, my name is Randy and my family and I just relocated to Cape Coral Florida from NW Iowa to further my ministry as I am a Pastor. A little history about myself, I lived in Florida from 1980 to 1996 and had a couple palm collections, one in St Pete, the other in Orlando. I learned about palms from great palm collectors such as Tom Pavluvcik in St Pete, Paul Drummond, Dr. Young in Tampa among many others. I was an officer of the Central Florida Palm Society and was a member of the City Beautiful Commission of St. Pete. I was involved in the Gizelle Kopsick Palm Arboretum in St Pete back in the 80s.

I am so happy to be back in Florida to start my palm collection again. So my hunt for palms begins! I will have pictures soon of my emerging palm collection.

Thanks

Welcome back Randy. Will you miss the corn and Norway Spruce windbreaks? I'm from Southern Illinois myself but live in Polk county now (between Winter Haven and Lake Wales).

Land O Lakes FL, a suburb on the North Side of Tampa, FL

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

I am a Kayaker, Hiker, Bicyclist, and amateur Photographer that loves the outdoors.

Welcome Randy,

I think one of the biggest differences you might find starting this collection, as opposed to the past....is this time it will be much easier to locate and purchase exotic material. Whether starting from seed, or planting full sized landscape specimens, the internet makes it easy to locate just what you want. Smaller stuff can be shipped right to your door. Larger items can be purchased from Palmtalk folks in your area.

There may be some species that you might not even be aware of, if you have not been keeping up to date. Tahina spectabilis was only discovered in the past few years. Sabal "Lisa's" are a mutant form of S. palmetto....these as well as other exciting species might find there way into your new garden. You picked the best place to quickly catch up, I hope you will show us plenty of pictures of how your yard develops.

Thank you Keith,

I don't think I will miss the corn, as I saw a lot of it the past 5 years!

Thanks for the welcome.

I have noticed several differences since the last time, such as several name changes for some palms. I can still identify most palms, not sure how as I can barely remember what I did yesterday!

I have also noticed many palms that were rare or hard to find are now at Home Depot. I am really looking forward to starting my collection again.
