These pictures were taken around November of 2012. I purchased this palm as a cone.

These photos are a few months old. This palm seems like it is always dropping an old leaf. Super fast for me--also loving the black stems!

I will try to get a photo of the newly emerging red ramenta today, when I get off of work.

The photos are a bit out of focus but the fuzz can be seen--I think in one shot, you can even make out the red. It has just started to fuzz out, so I gather it will get more pronounced.

Andrew, are you growing this palm in full FL sun? It looks like it is in partial shade in the photos.

How much cold have these experienced?

Those pics are beautiful, have you had any problems with it? You probably don't see much cold that far down on the Gulf.

Full sun--meaning no plants blocking it overhead, but there are big trees further away so when the sun is close to setting or just rising, this palm does not see the sun. But if this palm couldn't take full sun, it would have burned by now.

One time, my family and I traveled up north. While up that way, I saw some 'white' stuff on the ground--the parents said it was 'snow'.

Posted

That is pretty funny man, yeah I was born and raised here as well though I did spend a short time in the NE after college that was enough for me. My first real exposure to snow left a lasting impression and that was that it is wet and very, very cold and I you don't want to live were it snows. lol I wish I had held on to mine now. It was questionable if I could keep them going every year at the time and I sold them. I should have kept one in a planter. What other dypsis are you growing?

thats a great looking palm! i have mine in full sun but it always looks less than happy. im keeping hopes that it will lock in and take off. its been 2 years now.

Thanks Steve--I am blown away by it, since I always hear you guys lusting over the sp. 'black stem' that we can't grow--well this is the 'black stem' for us South Florida guys ;)

Just to see, I got close on one of the stems to see if I could clean it and see what the real color is---BLACK.

Steve, this palm will jump for you soon. They want to be in full sun for sure. Do you have any pic's you can share of yours?

Said it before but worth repeating. A bunch of seed was distributed as albofarinosa that grew into this palm above which is clearly very similar to droopy onilahensis.

Posted

Rich. My palm is albofarinosa. It came from the original stock to which this palm was described. Onilahensis does not grow well here, if at all(I have only seen it twice, locally and only once in the ground). The fact that my palm and others like it, grow like a weed, also kinda kills your argument...

Posted

I know that Andrew! I meant to post the comment in the other thread. Annoyingly I can't seem to delete it now.

Ah, ok. Sorry for the mistake!

I was over my dad's yesterday and this is fast becoming one of my favorites in his yard. From the pictures, you can tell what I mean by fast. He also has a lot of palms...

I am now thinking of placing one of the many 3gals we have in the nursery, under my in-law's decaryi--Yep, that's right, I am already thinking about hybrids! :winkie: Funny how an 'albo' can be so 'onyx'!
