Wow! Your palms are looking good! What's your humidity like in that room?

  • Author

Thanks! I try not to let it drop below 60%. Most of the time that's fairly easy, but I have a humidifier and evaporative cooler in case things get too dry.

Jon

Brooksville, FL 9a

WOW, such a nice collection!

But all these palms are in pots and would be so pleased in the soil of our Doranakanda garden! :)

I'll show you my A. macrocalyx and other Pinangas... you'll smile, Jon!

I wish ours will have such a good growth.

All of yours look great! I'm especially jealous of this one which begins to die the moment it sees me...

Philippe,

Yes, sadly I cannot grow anything remotely tropical outside, as we get a few freezes a year here. Maybe one day I'll have the chance to have my own piece of the tropics! Until then, this is my sanctuary.

Cindy,

Keep trying! I killed many of these before I finally got this one to grow. Once past the seedling stage they're pretty easy to grow as long as you keep them wet enough. You've got some amazing Pinangas as well! I'm pretty jealouse of that sp. Thai Mottled that you have. Mine had tons of mottling like that, but I think I over fertilized it because it went mostly green now...

Thought I'd post a few photos of how things have grown. A lot of stuff is too big now to photograph without taking it outside away from everything else.

Jon, I know you're such a big Pinanga admirer and it's great your collection is doing so well for you. Your babies are happy, they are well cared for. Good Pinanga thread.

Jon,

I join Tim in admiring your collection, which you name "humble" collection. What would be a "wonderful" collection?

I am impressed you grow Areca macrocalyx and so many Pinanga species in pots indoor.
Do you really intend to bring them to Doranakanda garden when they have grown enough? :)

Philippe, I believe Jon will be spending a few days in Hawaii before heading for Sri Lanka, but I'll make sure he gets on the plane with a couple left.

Jon, great thread mate, never get sick of looking at Pinanga's or areca's for that matter, you've got some gems there :greenthumb::greenthumb::greenthumb:

Paul

Top thread. Some of my favourite sp there!

Tim

Jon, I share the same sentiments as Tim, good to see you back on PT, and if you dont mind me saying, but since land is "so cheap" on the Big Island, why dont you "make the move" there and follow your "passion" ? :)

Thanks everyone for the complements. Phillipe, Tim and Pete, your gardens have been huge inspirations for me. They're part of the reason I'm in the hobby.

Pete,

I'd love to get land on the big island. Thing is, we have a lot of family here in Florida and the kids love having their grandparents nearby. Maybe someday... For now, the plan is to buy 10 acres here in zone 9b and build a large greenhouse for the sensitive stuff. Avocados, blueberries, etc will grow outside so we plan to try to live off the land as much as possible.

Paul,

Thanks for the kind remarks. I've seen some of your threads and it looks like you're starting an impressive collection yourself.

Pinanga are such a beautiful species. Love them all. Great pictures!

No No No! We hope to see more of these palms, even I get crazy of jealousy.

I too check the feet of our Areca macrocalyx and hope to see some red tint :)

Phillipe,

That's a very nice Areca macrocalyx. Even without the red, the large, upright fronds and overall form of the palm make it one of my favorites.

Jon, I think its time for "family round the table talk" about "all" selling up, and heading for Hawaii :)

Is this indoors all the time? How has it been as far as growth speed and care?
