Killer heat - Sth East Queensland

Only got to 36 here today thanks to a "cool Southerly" that arrived at around 2, was a fun family day in the dam though with plenty of Watermelon eaten by us all.

The Dictyocaryums seem to love this temp esp if in a deep, rich , moist bed and filtered light, their spears are bolting up.

Record are being "broken" in Oz for Highest temps thats for sure, hope this attatchment works

Pete :)

Pretty toasty around the Caboolture area with us today. The time and day on that thermometer are wrong, it was around 2pm.

Nice to see some "heat" threads here in the dead of winter in North Florida. Always read the Aussie threads even though ya'll are upside down and a$$-backards' on your weather... :winkie:

One question....since you know you get this kind of weather....why not plant....dare I say....dicot canopy so you have some shade during these heat events? .... What does one use for canopy over there...Eucs?

BTW, perfect Rhopie weather here continues for the 4th month.....cool and overcast but no freeze so far up here in the usually cold north Gulf Coast.

Here is the canopy covering my young Burretiokentia...it only gets an hour of full sun every day...the B.dumasii is in the centre bottom of this photo...notice hoe other stuff has no burn...

Gold Coast, Queensland Latitude 28S. Mild, Humid Subtropical climate. Rainfall - not consistent enough!

How does that burretiokentia look after today Daryl?? Hopefully you found a little shade house for it before todays heat!!!!! Got to 41.9 at mine and there are certainly signs of stress on some plants / palms

Well Ben, I didn't worry about it too much today, because most of it was already fried from the other day...

What else is left to burn? :hmm:

Great photo Daryl!!! Euterpe sp. on the far right??

Hi Ben, no . sorry. nothing too exotic...just some volunteer Bangalows...most of the trees in the photo are volunteers...the Umbrella Cheesetree (Glochidium sumatranum) and Bleeding Heart Tree ( Omolanthus populifolius) are both volunteers too...but provide great canopy, along with the Macaranga overhanging the foreground. Too bad the Burretiokentia didn't think so!

I figured B. dumasii, so the rest must be rare too!! Nice looking bangalow anyway!! Pity it didn't take the hit / heat for "the team" today!!

Posted

Hopefully it will survive!

Talking of temperatures, I see Beaudesert hit 44.6C yesterday for a new record there. Interesting to see how the palms out there survived.

Much of my stuff got baked, no canopy formed in time. Super heat, low humidity. I don't think anything is actually dead, although a small Pritchardia minor looks so weak. I'm surprised to see the Roystoneas so badly affected, I think that is due to a combination of lack of feed and the scorching lights of the alien spaceships when they landed on top of them.

Happy Gardening

Sorry to hear that Wal. If you have the water available, a good drenching with the irrigation water should help them pull through.

It was quite warm and muggy today for sure...when I checked earlier it was 34C and 69% humidity...a nice thunderstorm has just hit here to water the garden...hopefully we will get some decent rain out of it!
