Oct Stock Market Discussion..............

Have a new position w/ S. Expectations have been low so I'm hoping a good beat on earnings. Sprint and the frog turned prince formally known as Clearwire have been pretty huge for me over the past year or so. Will definitely put a conservative stop because if sprint ER hits less than expected it will tank hard.

Sprint, the wireless provider, is still terrible in my area but it must work well somewhere?

Are there any earnings reports that folks are following?

Keeping an eye on MSFT. Many of my apple/google loving techish friends have been raving about microsoft's Surface tablet, as opposed to more expensive/inferior alternatives. I have yet to use it. Word is that they are selling very well. May mean for a better than expected ER.

I have read some interesting comments about the profit margins on some of these tablets. Nobody appears to be making any money on them besides Apple. What good is selling a bunch if there is no profit? Sure, gaining market share, but without it translating to the bottom line, it will be hard for it to translate to the the stock price.

Not sure if tablets were the kicker but MSFT did pretty well.

looks like it "Tanked" after hours

Like NetFlix, Rob is the only guy I know who can say something has crashed/tanked after gaining 300 pts and then dropping 30.

Give AAPL a chance to settle. Again they are a victim of almost impossible expectations. And the quarter really wasn't bad. If it has tanked, then now I am up 100 pts, instead of 110.

Edit: Already coming back a bit.

Looks like it may even finish up on the day. But a long way from a tank. Patience Rob, you need more patience. Look months ahead, not minutes.

Dean-

that's a heck of a system you have there.

what % of total funds (no real estate holdings etc) are you up so far this year ?

not just Apple but when you include everything -stocks /bonds or whatever................

if this is a bogus question than how to analyze how well you did overall ?

if you dont want the other folks to know than just send me a PM

Tell that to the folks that bought at the top when it was over 700 and watched their money cut in half in a matter of months.

they probably wanted to puke in a barrel

Not playing that game Rob. But I will say I am confident I have out performed the market to date, thanks to Apple. Add in 3-4% in dividends, at a preferred tax rate, and I'm pleased - whether you claim to have done better or not.

You wanted a "call" for a long term turn-around story, and inflection point, as in how I try and trade. I gave you one, real time. I have yet to spot another.

I have a feeling you would like nothing better than to have Apple drop to $100. And I would simply say that I sold it before it started dropping for a solid profit, the same as you do.

The people who lived through the great depression continued to put their money in their mattresses the rest of their lives, because they lived in fear. Subsequently they missed out on any chance to make their money work for them during the great bull runs.

You must have really got stung in the big recession. But everyone who just stayed put didn't lose a penny and are still on pace for a great retirement.

not at all

I bailed out and missed the crash of 2008 - my friend was a heart attack victim and nothing to do but

watch financial tv shows and the market - he warned me and i bailed.

got back in at 768 SPX which I road for years

End of year we will have a thread about how everyone did

Till then have fun this is no longer even about the stock market - its all about who can top who

and this #$%^ was started by Dean who found it his mission in life to undermine anything I had to say.

even when it was just a general comment about the market.

and now Mr consecutive states that he put almost ALL his money into a single stock that was in a huge downtrend.

something is " rotten in Denmark.."

had the stock crashed he would have said he was in 5%

I don't really have to, the market has done it for me. I just point it out.

Yahoo is starting to move. Was hoping to get it under 32 and may have missed that boat. Sprint continues to ramp up to its ER.

Apple didn't hit my stop yet. Was kinda worried that it was going to "tank" premarket well below my stop. Looks like it might just flatline for awhile.

redant -

you bought this bigtime

what is it going to do now - lets hear your call

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=XLF&t=1m&l=on&z=l&q=l&c=

ot this stock which you bought for your IRA - whats it going to do ?

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=JGT+Basic+Chart&t=3m

you can pick on me - if you make a wrong call I should be able to do the same

Edited by trioderob

Both those are winners for me Rob, JGT, in price, 10.57, already collected about 5% in div's, if it hold at his level I'll get another 2.5% in Jan. XLF I'm positive on as well, but the lack of rising interest rates I think is slowing this trade down but still better then under the mattress. I do have losers, don't get me wrong, but I try to make them a short history and move on.

redant-

looking at the posts you have made alot of these stocks you picked up have just done what the general market has done.

you are just riding a bull market like everyone else as shown here:

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=BMY&t=2y&l=on&z=l&q=l&c=^GSPC

All while you hide in a bank paying nothing, or buried in your back yard. BX is up over 31% for me not including div's, all over a couple of months.

Sorry Rob, you have no credibility regarding your "plays". I did tell you about COH the other day, told you the day I made the trade, up over 5% in a couple of days. Do things like make a call, tell when your in and out, gain some trust. You have 0 presently.

Rob - you should take a look at the Investing Game redant is playing - remember the one you conveniently declined to join because there would be some real accountability if you did.

He is up almost 9% in a short time, leading the pack.

How about a "I bought or sold 'x' at 'y' today." Instead of "this is next thing to watch." You can't make money "watching" anything.

Guys-

I have to say, although I havent posted in these threads, they have provided some entertainment! We have characters in this play each filling a role flawlessly. This is Emmy type stuff :-)

On a more germaine note-----

What type of returns are you active traders seeing?

I confess to a hands off lazy mans approach (so I just use index funds, and as time has gone on ive moved to pretty much just one). This year its up 13% and some change and 9.7% since inception (1985). I'm content with this I suppose since there is not a lot of risk. But, I have to wonder how much better might one do with a more active approach?

I am loving it. Myself and eight other coworkers put in $100 each at the IPO. We doubled down at $32. The idea being we sell it in a year or two and throw a party. Right now we are looking at a trip to Vegas with our wives. If it goes up more maybe Cabo or a cruise. If it goes down a backyard BBQ.

What index funds are you in? I too have index funds and I am up over 24% year to date. I am 100% stocks so if you have bonds that would explain the difference. The primary factor in how a fund performs over time is the fees they charge. Index funds have the lowest fees and will out perform almost all managed funds over a long period of time. Also most active stock traders will underperform the index as well (except Rob). My advice would be to keep doing what you are doing, and look for the lowest fees you can find in your investment options.

Bags-

The primary index fund I have been using is VGSTX (Vanguard Star). I initially used it for my daughters college fund, then thought......looks good enough for everything :-) It not a sexy fund or one that's going to go up 100% in a year, but its not likely to go down 100% either!
