Car is wrapped around a Bismarckia nobilis, the palm did not even budge. Unfortunate that Deputy Rivera died from his sustained injuries 11 days after the accident. :bummed:

This reminds me of a story Christian and Ken told me of a car they saw that has smashed into a royal palm by Ken's house. The car was apparently totaled but the royal didn't look like anything happened.

Too bad about officer Rivera. We have similar situations out here with Phoenix.

Hmm. Royals don't appear anywhere near as tough as something like a Phoenix. Those are tough! They're like they've been made of steel cables woven and cast with concrete.

Some palms cut right down with one whack of a machete. Others won't cut for love nor money.

Hulk Hogans son did something similar to this right down the road from where I used to live. He survived his friend in the passenger seat did not do so well.

I would imagine Phoenix would fare quite well also. Royals are tough, just imagine how much they must withstand when a hurricane comes though. It makes sense that they can fare well against a small car. We often imagine the magnitude of man-made things as being huge because we compare them to things we know well, like our own strength, but an earthquake or hurricane puts out so much more it's crazy.

There is a sharp curve at the entrance to Leu Gardens. A few years ago a drunk missed the curve and plowed straight into a Phoenix canariensis with a BMW 3 series, probably about 40-50mph. It snapped the palm in 2, the car was stopped by a brick column. The drunk wasn't injured but the car was totalled. If the car had been an old Mercedes W123/mini Panzer tank like mine, it would have gone through the Garden too.
