So a bunch of coconuts floated down to our end of the Isabelle Canal and our sharp-eyed great nephew noticed that one of them had a green spear emerging through the husk. My husband plucked it from the water and brought it to me. I've never had luck germinating coconuts but here comes one that germinates with no human help at all.

I potted it into a 2g pot and set it in the Caribbean Garden. Tonight is irrigation night.

Nice! Growing coconuts from sprouts is super fun! I've got 2 that I found when I was in Miami last weekend. The best part is once they've germinated for sure, as waiting months for the green shoot to emerge is the worst part!.

Wow that is super lucky! I drive around all the time looking for coconuts. My husband picked up three that washed up on the Cape Coral Yacht Club beach. One looked great and fresh, but smelled like no other smell I have ever smelled before! :sick: It got tossed. The others you could hear the milk inside, so I potted them up. Now I wait and wait...... and wait.

I germinated a bunch of coconuts over the winter by putting them in large (25 gal or larger) black plastic pots and covering the nuts with pure horse manure, then placed in a sunny location. I believe the heat from the black pots along with the heat from the manure made a huge difference. I had never had much luck before, and never over the winter. The nicest coconut palm I have in my yard my son found in the river when he was about 10, with a tiny sprout like yours. It's now massive, looks like a Jamaican tall with a big fat base.

That's pretty awesome to get free germinated cocos . Out here only thing we get are a bunch of free washies, almost can't get rid of them fast enough

Updated photos of my coconut found in the river. It's getting to tall to get into a picture! Sorry Zeeth, still not coconuts from this one, have no idea why. It flowered several times but didn't set fruit while many other coconuts just next to it did.

That growth is just amazing! I've read that tall type coconuts take up to 11 years to set fruit, so yours is probably just about to that point.
