Hedyscepe canterburyana germinated -they like it coool !

I remember a long time ago on this forum that there was a topic on germinating Hedyscepe .and there was quite a bit of disbelief that Hedyscepe germinate in cool conditions and not warm soil in a greenhouse or indoors ! :bemused:

http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/15251-hedyscepe-canterburyana/?hl=hedyscepe

Well i can confirm that down here in cold wet soil in my shade house they have started germinating in late Autumn . The Soil temperature swings between 45 -60 f and seems liek the ideal range to germinate this palm . The seed was soaked for 24 hrs them buried 3 cm in large community trays in a mix that is70 % cactus mix and 30 % perlite . They were put down in July 2012 and no germination occurred over Summer when soil temps were above 68 F 20 C .

by the end of winter i should have around 70 Happy Hedy's that originated from Pogobob's palm !

So when it come to sowing Hedyscepe be cooool ! :greenthumb:

Great work Troy!! It's always exciting to see any palm seeds germinate, I get a real buzz out if it no matter the sp.

H. canterburyana is a great palm but I agree they like it cool.... They don't like the heat and humidity that we get here in QLD, I don't recall seeing many / any happy here....Pity...l I have already lost 2!! Not sure I will try again?

They are cool growers indeed! Congrats on the germination, can't wait to see your garden turn into a Hedyscepe jungle. I love my Hedyscepes. They grow fabulously well in our warmish-cool nights coastal climate.

I germinate most of my palms outdoors in 15 gallon pots exposed to the elements. if it germinates, it's got a a chance to grow here. If not, I am not about to give it heat to germinate. We've managed to get 100% germination on p. cocoides in 6 months that way, throw the seeds in native soil with husk and all.

Yes Troy I have 2 x Carpoxylon in my garden, I love to and they grow very well for me!! A Hedyscape wouldn't go astray though, no room left for 1 now anyway?

Wow! Yours looks perfect. One of the most beautiful palms you can grow.  Slow going but worth the wait. I’ve got two 5G specimens and yearn for the day they have a couple feet of wooded trunk.

That is grown to perfection Troy. Well done.

Back in 2009 I got some seedlings in from LHI with the palm nursery I was working for at the time. Even in deep shade in Perth they struggled. I kept them moist and out of the sun and by about March I would see a couple pass on every year. I think I started with 15. 44C days and 28C at midnight do not suit these at all.

Anyway when I moved down south I ended up bringing 4 that survived and they're all planted. 3 of them took off in the cooler climate and 3 are about the size of your one, but yours is in much better nick I reckon. One was a runt and will be a bonsai forever. But in 2018 I got some seed and its remarkable how the cooler climate really pushes these ones along. I reckon I can grow them at least double the speed down here in Albany than I could in Perth. Ive lost none in summer or winter. They love the cool.

Here is my biggest Hedyscepe grown from seed from the pogobob Robert De  Jong garden in 2009.

I remember thinking 2 years ago that mine should be trunking in under 5 years and I was surprised that it happened way quicker than my original estimate.

These are nice! Since they seem to like lower temps and humidity are they viable as an indoor palm?

For contrast, mine started germinating in early summer.  It's been a cool start to summer, but we've still had days approaching 100F.  But to validate your experience, I don't believe I will see the first spear pushing until fall.  To remove the fruit easier I put them in a big black pot with rotting banana peels for about six weeks.  This pot was covered with another inverted black pot in order to keep the squirrels out.  It was in full sun for most of the day.  While I didn't have a thermometer in there, I'm pretty certain it was over 110F for a good part of the day.  But nights were in the low 40's F.  After six weeks, the fruit was removed and I potted them in a light potting mix topped with Hydroton clay balls.  The pot was placed in full shade.  Four weeks later they are popping roots.

Hello. I just read your posts about hedescype.I think I have previously contacted you about whether you had seeds of the nikau palm.

I am  doing university project on palm flora of south pacific, And i finnaly got all nikau seeds but still lack seeds of Hedyscepe canterburyana, howea belmpreana ,Lepidorrhachis mooreana and  Archontophoenix alexandrae and some other species of Archontophoenix .

I wonder if you could help me and sell some seeds of hedyscepe ? I have contacted all in NZ , and nobody have them , i hope that you will be able to help me.  I have also contacted Lord Howe Island nursery , but they told me that it is not allowed to inmoprt seeds from the island. it is very difficult to find them. I wonderif you have some aviable ? i will ofcourse pay you for everything . or maybe you know somebody who have them ? Do you know where i can contact Pogob? If you have seeds of the other species that i need i would gladly buy them from you,

Best greetings Alex.

At the moment hopefully I won't need any since I got some from the canary Islands, though I wasn't able to get very fresh seed it was sitting on the floor beneath the palm tree. Hopefully they germinate, but if not I will definitely consider that. There are a few different websites that sell archontophoenix seeds in Europe.

http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/15251-hedyscepe-canterburyana/?hl=hedyscepe

On ebay some of the sellers list the date the seed was collected which is useful. Which seller from Germany since I've ordered palm seed from Germany before?
