I know, we all have ants in our gardens. So far I know of no benefits to this. All of the ants in my garden cause some sort of problem...farming other insects and causing sooty mold, nesting in palm crowns and rotting out the apical bud to name just a couple of issues...

They also stop you from sitting on the grass for too long otherwise you get bitten or stung, depending on the species. I don't know how many different species I have in the garden, but probably up to 50 I guess. The worst two for annoyance are the green ant that hangs out in the grass and has a real nice sting that lasts for a few hours. They always seem to bite in the tender areas, either between your toes, or, heaven forbid, inside your clothes...OK they aren't as bad as fire ants but are still a real PITA.

The other really annoying ant at home is our local jumping Bull Ant. These are very aggressive if accidentally disturbed...ie you come into their territory near the nest...they get all 'hoppy' and jump all over the place, including up onto your feet. They can move quickly and attack you with their large mandibles, inflicting a painful bite. Their scouts also hang out on foliage and if you brush past...watch out! These Bull ants are about 15-20mm long (3/4 inch), nowhere near as large as their poisonous cousin that fortunately is rare in my garden, the Bull Joe.

Anyway, here is a closeup I took of a 'Hoppy Joe' on my fence. Please feel free to post your ant stories here too... :)

Argentine ants here in Northern California. I see fewer red ants and the black ant that was here years ago I dont see anywhere here anymore. Seems Ive read somewhere that the Argentine ants are pushing other species out.e

At least they dont bite much. If you get enough of them on you though- you can feel the bites.

I remember "Ants PRA". I cannot locate the vignette that led into and highlighted that little fun PRA around here anymore. Has it been expunged?

no...you've been expunged!!

The weight of lies will bring you down / And follow you to every town / Cause nothin happens here

That doesn't happen there / So when you run make sure you run / To something and not away from

Cause lies don't need an aero plane / To chase you anywhere
