A problem I have also had in connection with a row of Rhopaloblaste planted along Maka'ala Dr. next to one of Hilo's shopping centers on the Big Island of Hawaii (see below, taken in 2006).

There is a monograph on the genus by Roy Banka and William J. Baker that was published in the Kew Bulletin 59 47-69 (2004). From the mono, it would appear that ceramica is augusta on steroids, same morphology, but longer crownshaft, longer leaflets, larger seeds, etc. R. augusta comes from the Nicobar Islands and R. ceramica from the eastern Indonesian Archipelago and New Guinea.

I once measured some of the parts in question, and the measurements were intermediate between the data cited in the monograph.

Mike Merritt

Big Island of Hawaii, windward, rainy side, 740 feet (225 meters) elevation

165 inches (4,200 mm) of rain per year, 66 to 83 deg F (20 to 28 deg C) in summer, 62 to 80 deg F (16.7 to 26.7 Deg C) in winter.

Thanks,

This is R.ceramica ( I saw the label) in Singapore, I love this palm.

Is it usual to plant three together? good for the plants?
