Stop Bumping Old Threads ...

At the risk of upsetting those who disdain the bumping of old threads, I will post updated photos of the Moose Land Palms here. Some appreciate seeing updated photos in the old threads but - I don't want to ruffle any feathers ...

A juvenile Corypha umbraculifera measuring 13+ ft. of overall height. The wooden fence to the left is a 6 footer.

Copernicia macroglossa, shot from the roof top. Got this from Ron Schaff as a three gallon plant @ 1995. Found out later my ceptic tank drain field was not positioned as I was informed. The Copernicia macroglossa is growing smack dab in the middle of it. Can't take the risk of moving it so I gotta get my 1200 gallon tank pumped every couple of years. It may be presumed that this fatty palm really likes my $&%#. :P

My tallest Dypsis, Dypsis cabadae. It is over 30 ft. tall, I no longer harvest its seed. Got it as a single stem, one gallon plant in Nov. 1993 - planted it in the Spring of 1994. It now has 4 stems. Was not a rare palm in 1993 but wasn't a very common one either. :)

Coccothrinax montana planted a year ago. Hung out in a pot for a couple of years before getting around to planting it. Definitely not a very fast palm. :hmm:

Another slow palm, Coccothrinax scoparia. Also planted about a year ago. They both are planted in the wide mulch ring surrounding the Corypha umbraculifera. Both are situated to the south of the Corypha to get adequate sun exposure that a Coccothrinax prefers.

Kerriodoxa elegans also planted about a year ago. Reportedly a slow palm, this one ahs been moving faster than anticipated. I did dig a very wide and deep hole with 50% of the native soil amended. Situated in a shaded area near some of my Licualas. :greenthumb:

Jeff - in the first photo you can see a wire that the palm has grown into. That is my phone line about 12 ft above the ground. I gotta get AT&T to relocate the line.

OK - here is a tropical, Itaya amicorum. Ironically, I got it from "the Rainforest Collection" as a one gallon palm. It is now stepped up into a ten gallon container. This palm does not like my calcareous soil so I'll keep stepping it up as needed. It did survive our harsh 2010 winter. Moose Land does maintain a constant 4+ degree F advantage over Fairchild during cold fronts due to the microclime that has been created. B)

Moose, That's a beautiful Corypha specimen. Wish mine would get up some speed and grow. Your macroglossa is looking healthy too.

Moose's utan needs less by about 10 feet.

Guess how much a frond with petiole weighs.

The Moose's umbraculifera is planted about 6 ft. from the property line. So I only need about 1/2 the diameter for the crown spacing. I'll share it with the neighbor  . Closest palm is 14 ft. away (east), it is Cocos nucifera cv. 'Fiji Dwarf". The coconut should out pace the Corypha and coexist with no problem. There is a Jakfruit tree about 15 ft to the other side (west) - same scenario as the Coconut.

I do not anticipate my palm achieving the dimensions like the one Ken posted. The one at Fairchild that fruited and died was never that huge. Ken - my Corypha utan is planted in the side yard. I can not get a decent photo as there is too much stuff planted around it to get a good look. The utan does have other plantings within 6 ft. :indifferent:

Ron,

I'm not growing any in Cali, but I have several planted at the nursery and the house. My largest is about 18' tall with over 10' of trunk. It's actually dropping ripe fruit as we talk. :) They grow very well here in south Florida and will handle any cold weather they might see.

Update - this palm does not like wind. Its very fragile leaves get bent, ripped and frayed easily. I suspect in habitat they are found in valleys protected from winds. Mike Harris has the nicest one I have seen, besides the one in Fairchild Rare Plant House, on his pool patio. At Mike's suggestion, this palms destiny is one of container culture. I just stepped it up into a 20 gallon clay pot plus a healthy feeding of Palm Special fertilizer this morning. It will live out its life in my "yet to be constructed" shadehouse ptotected from the wind,

Coral Gables, FL 8 miles North of Fairchild USDA Zone 10B

Moose, thanks for the info on the Itaya. I have one in the back yard that I planted over 3 years ago in my calcareous sand. It is surviving, barely, and not growing. I'm thinking of trenching around it over the coming weeks, then repotting it. Can anyone tell me how sensitive this palm is to root disturbance? I don't intend to rush things. Should I delay the final move until rainy season starts in June? We irrigate 2x per week but otherwise it receives little rain this time of year.

David - next time you plan on visiting the South Florida area, give me a heads up. There will be Turkey Legs on the grill upon your arrival. Sorry, no amusement rides presently. We do have the challenging Acrocomia Trunk Shimmy for entertainment. Speaking of Pirates of the Caribbean - Johnny Depp is from Miramar, FL, just up the road a piece.
