Picked up this little gem (Hydriastele beguinii) at the last South Florida Palm Society Meeting Auction. It was donated to the Society by forum member Ellis Brown. :greenthumb:

It was in a tube full of roots, so it just got stepped up yesterday into a two gallon container.

Any experiences with this palm in South Florida? California? Australia? :interesting: Anybody got one in the ground? :hmm:

Moose - I have managed to kill three in the ground and even one in my cold frame, they don't want any part of our winters! Going to try a H. dransfieldii this year.

Moose,

This palm has been around for more than 20 years here in south Florida. They do well here, but I did loose mine when it got down to 30-32F a couple of winters ago. But that's highly unusual though. And their a pretty fast grower as well. What's really cool is the OBI form with big, entire leaves.

Jeff - any advice for growing it here in California, I love this palm, just tired of mass murdering it.

Good for you Ron, good luck with such a beautiful palm. I'd give you advice, but what I thought was H. beguinii here in my garden

was misnamed and who knows what it is now.

I picked one of these up a couple of days ago as well. I look forward to seeing how it does here.

Great find, Ron. I had this one and a couple other species in my shade garden but the winter of 09/10 killed them all. I have another and an H. dransfieldii in pots but I'm afraid to plant them. Hydriasteles may be too cold-sensitive for my area.

I don't know, I think it just might be too tropical for you. I would ask some other collectors in your area on their past results.

It got planted years back. Irma has it listing at a 45 degree angle. Guess I should right her up? :bemused:

You are asking this now? Where have you been for the past few months... Yes, pull it up until you hear roots popping-stop when you do and brace it at whatever angle that is.

Right that baby! And don't forget to take/share pics!

Naples (inland), FL - technically 10a but more like 9b in the winter :hmm:
