Since we are lucky to grow palms in a tropical climate, this is how I do for germinating seeds:

http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/38918-germinating-methods/

We also try to put the seeds directly in the ground (Actinorhytis, Pelagadoxa...), in the same way fallen Areca nuts are germinating like weeds!

But since we love Areca and any native palm species, we respect all the seedlings.

Thank you Kris for having started this thread years ago!

best regards

Philippe

I have some problems regarding fungus on the seeds that eventually gets inside the seed and kill it.. I read something about dipping the seeds in a bleach diluted in water... What is this technique to kill fungus all about...?

Hi Jonas,

Fungus is mainly due to 2 reasons,

one is that your germination medium could be too moist(wet).

another reason could be the seeds are old and not properly cleaned & disinfected.

the seeds when socked for 2 to 3 days the fresh water must be changed daily.and on the 3rd day sock the seeds with mild liquid bleech solution or fungicides for 45 minutes.then allow these seeds to air dry throughly in room temperature.in cooler regions use hair dryer.

you can also sterilise the germination medium by boiling in hot water. And in the final stage, the cocopeat or the potting medium can be laced with fungicide.

And never fear to try new methods Because what works for you will not work the other person.

Its always safe to first try a method using 10 to 12 seeds initially.if it works then order in hundreds.

As the saying goes haste makes waste.

try it and give us your feedback.

love,

kris.

keying in my valuable comments...! Thank you Kris,

I have written an almost provocative post for all european or american friends who germinate their palm seeds with High-tec solutions, since I just told how I throw some seeds away but they agree to grow;

Today Kasun told me 23 seedlings were now growing on the garbage! such a surprise!

You must have the same conditions in your garden, isn't it? do you have many Areca around your home or is it too dry?

When do you go to Kodaikanal and post pics of Bentinckia condapanna? It would be the BPOTY: Best Post Of The Year!

Kindest regards

Philippe
