Cindy,

All depends on your definition of "stiltroots". Areca vestiaria, for instance, will develop very impressive stiltroots if planted in rocky areas with little soil. If planted in deep soil they may not have ANY stilt roots. Clinostigmas have interesting and impressive roots, and again, really depends on how they are planted. Deep soil or not. Here are a few examples from my old garden.

Great photos! Thanks! As to the definition of stilt roots, I have no idea and have just copied what IPS publications or Palm books I happen to own have listed. I do appreciate the clarification and perhaps that's part of the reason I couldn't find a list in an appendix. For my purposes I'm tending to include rather than exclude, but could certainly make note of the palms which have the most consistent/impressive stilts. Thanks for the correction of my C. ponapense spelling, too. So the current list of spp.is now below with maybe the Iriarteas, Verschaffeltia and Socrateas as the most impressive/consistent?:

1. Areca guppyana

2. Areca ipot ?

3. Areca triandra

4. Areca vestiaria

5. Camecarpus fulcitus

6. Chamaedorea tepejilote

7. Clinostigma exorrhizum

8. Clinostigma harlandii

9. Clinostigma ponapense

10. Clinostigma samoense

11. Cryosophila warscewiczii

12. Dictocaryum lamarkianum

13. Dictyocaryum fuscum

14. Drymophloeous substichus

15. Drymophloeus beguini

16. Drymophloeus hentyi

17. Drymophloeus litigiosus

18. Drymophloeus oliviformis

19. Drymophloeus pachycladus

Thanks for sharing the list Cindy! I love stilt-root. Unfortunately those exposed roots make palms extra sensitive to occasional freezes and frosts we have, so I can't grow most of them. I have 5 C. tepejilote seedlings in the ground and will see how long they last.

Quick taxonomic update:

Campecarpus fulcitus = Cyphophoenix fulcita (Pintaud, Baker, 2008)

Drymophloeus substichus = Veitchia subdisticha (Zona, Francisco-Ortega, Jestrow, Baker, Lewis, 2011)

Drymophloeus hentyi = Ponapea hentyi (Zona, Francisco-Ortega, Jestrow, Baker, Lewis, 2011)

Drymophloeus pachycladus = Veitchia pachyclada (Zona, Francisco-Ortega, Jestrow, Baker, Lewis, 2011)

Gulubia hombronii = Hydriastele hombronii (Baker, Loo, 2004)

Iriartea setigera = Iriartella setigera (Wendland, 1860)

Physokentia rosea = Physokentia petiolata (Watling, 2005)

Add to this list all Gaussias and Prestoea montana and acuminata. chamaedorea metallica too. Dypsis decarii,D. lutescence and A. meriilli do this in rocky slopes areas.
