No guesses on the Pinanga ?

As usual, I have no idea. However, I'd certainly like to know so I can add it to my wish list! Lovely!

We don't know either! It was bought as a Pinanga sp. As you can see we will probably have some seed soon. :)

I love all these ornamentals mixed in with the palms. I thought I had 3 white bat flowers and 3 black bats but when they recently bloomed it seems they are all white. I'm glad it's not the reverse as the black ones are more easily available, at least in Puerto Rico. I DO plan to add the black ones as so few flowers are as dark as these. Please keep the photos coming! I've included some photos of my white Taccas (with my children) in case someone hasn't seen these flowers. Easy in the wet shady tropics I think. I was inspired to plant these by a visit to a lovely botanical garden on the Big Island just north of Hilo I think. This visit was many years ago while at a meeting before I'd ever seen Puerto Rico. Interesting how my brain filed away that image all that time until I had a place to grow them.

When Dean opens up a B&B! One time the San Diego Hort. Society came by for a little tour. Of course if you came over you would get a tour too! :)

J.D. Andersen has an awesome garden on the Hilo side and they have a very nice vacation rental there.

Putu,

Of all the gardens I follow on PT but have never seen in person your is at the top of the list for catching my interest. When you add to it your photos it becomes a post like few others on PT. The rugged conditions you have changed as well as the ones you have not are slowly becoming the property of so many interesting plants. Hawaii is such a charmed place for a palm nut.

Thanks for taking the time to share.

Well it is really Dean's collection and hard work... I have added a couple things here and there... things I have propagated from cuttings etc. Every couple of weeks I bring more plants like anthuriums, calladiums, orchids, vireyas, tis and other colorful stuff. But what I have added is very small in comparison to what Dean already had. My small contribution was mainly helping Dean load and unload truckloads of palms for the garden!! There are lots of other plants I have not included photo of, like our massive ti collection which getting larger all the time because I am getting my own new varieties from seed.

When you are on the Big Island let us know! You'll get the grand tour. :)

Bruce,

That is the same palm as you have pictured. According to J. Dransfield, these markings are unique to D. mananjarensis. And who am I to argue? However, I can testify that the D. mananjarensis with the nice red/dark red new spear and reddish new leaf is a much faster grower than the one with little or no color. So if you have a choice, I know which one I prefer. Whether the color will persist past the juvenile stage is yet to be seen.

Is that last Dypsis, D. tsaravoasira (formerly refered to as cerecea/nauseosa?). I got a crack up at the bird bath for scale. Now we just need something for scale next to the bird bath.

Yes Matty, you are right - but a little late with the name. It has been changed again. :) I didn't have time to give Angela the newest name. And I didn't want to give it incorrectly.

I believe this is finally the correct name and spelling. Hopefully we will not have to rename this beauty again.

It is now Dypsis ampasindavae

I'm fine remembering the names when I'm by myself. It's when I have to remember them in front of others when I blank out. Heisenberg's variation principle. The very act of observing something changes it.

I think I have a new favorite palm!!!

Bentinckia condapanna  there's three of them. We think it was three years ago that they were planted and they weren't trunking yet.

By far this is the most beautiful palm I have every seen,

Love all the little details you put into your garden, breathtaking!

Thanks Roger! The B. condopannas are in a hidden area that is kind of out of the way and not so easy to get to... so I hadn't seen them since before they trunked. I need to visit them more often!
