My only visit to the Loran Whitelock garden was way back on July 5, 1978 during the Palm Society Biennial. I remember being impressed with the collection even then!

Kim, thanks for sharing the Whitelock Garden with all of us. Bill thanks for adding some of your pics too. Even though I've visited Loran's exceptional garden on two different occasions in the past, I never tire seeing it over and over again. The plants and the setting make it one of a kind! Many of my garden Cycads came as tiny seedlings from 'Whitelock'.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Aw, Dave, I didn't get to taste your goulash! I know it was good because it was all gone.

Thanks everyone for all the positive comments. This was my first visit to this garden and it felt like the plants, paths and vistas were just begging to be photographed. :)

Be sure to check out the "PSSC Meeting..." thread by Mike (Surf Guy) and Vince's thread when he can post it (palmcurry), both of them are very talented with a camera.

Great presentaion Kim. Bill too...you guys got allot of the nice details in this place. It was a wonder to be around such old plants.

The auction was half the fun for me. Unbelievable sick deals along with Dave's oratory are too much fun  Dave should get paid because he worked so hard! Palms were being auctioned so cheap it was theft!

I've come late to this thread, but I'm glad I didn't miss it. Garden - amazing, photography - gorgeous, commentary - well suited to the photography. I haven't seen any of the great gardens of southern California, including this one. Thanks, Kim.

No kidding Bill.

His garden and what he contributed will be hard to duplicate.

It was nice to see part of his garden at the Huntington a few months ago.

Of course Loran's collection moved to the Huntington, but in case you never got to tour the original garden,

here is the link to a short interview/tour with Loran for the PBS show Victory Gardenhttp://www.pbs.org/video/1372139957/

Yeah, that was a meeting, with a capital "M" like an old style meeting you dressed up to go to. The Holy Church of Palms and Cycads.

Not really relevant, but I gotta post this photo and short story.

5 or 6 yrs back, Loran came to Az to give a presentation to

our local group.  On the way to drive him back to the airport,

he asked if I would take him to the world famous (from 60 Minutes News)

Heart Attack Grill (now moved to Las Vegas).  The waitresses are all

dressed as seductive nurses and love posing with smiling customers.

I'll bet the grin lasted the whole afternoon!
