The end of the wall I made from old broken brick, to give the impression that the entire wall is brick covered w/plaster....

A backside (roadside) view...the palm in the middle is a Butia x Jubaea that I got from Patrick Shafer less than 4 years ago as a 3 leafed seedling! FAST !!

That's 95,000 BTU's of flesh searing capability...it's a beautiful thing.

Note the trashed Ensetes in the background. They were in good shape a week ago  :(

Great thread!  Beautiful pics all.  Reminds us to keep variety in the landscape, even in flat terrain.

You guys with your 'miniature' rock walls need to take a look at this size dry rock wall in Kailua-Kona!  It is located behind Border's parking lot.  You might also note the two different species of Royal palms here - Roystonea oleracea to the left and the Roystonea regia to the right.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Beautiful palms, amazing yards, and now wonderful rock walls... it's cruel and unusual punishment.  Keep it up.  :;):

Clayton, I don't suppose you have a larger version of the stone steps(?) picture in post #28?

Posted

Technically not a rockwall, but Lakina built these steps for us as well. That was about 8 years ago, and now it looks like they've been there for hundreds of years!

Yeah, did you do anything to encourage that moss, Bo? Like putting yogurt or buttermilk slurries on them, or does it just appear on its own?

Zac,

Ha ha, that's a good one!! :D  We certainly don't have to encourage moss here. Every now and then when I feel like it I may clean off a particular palm. When removing the moss from a palm it comes off very easily. Imagine a blanket surrounding a palm, attached with wimpy velcro! I'll take some pictures of moss on palms etc to show you.

Oh ok. Yeah I guess that was a stupid question since you are in the tropics. Here, moss grows on the north side of trees and in low moist areas. Then there is spanish "moss" Tillandsia usneoides, which grows in our coastal trees, but grows on rocks as well as trees in NE Mexico. Talk about weird.

These rock walls are an inspiration. They give such a sense of history and permanence to even newer gardens.

Does anybody have a good way of printing whole threads?  When I selected the "Print this Topic" link at the top of this page the thread was missing a majority of the pictures, although some were still there.  Any ideas?
