Since RPS is selling this seeds now,I´d like to know who else have seedlings of B.eriospatha x S.glaucescens.

I really hope there will be a lot of this unusual Butyagrus growing around the globe in the near future!!

I´m really curious..............

I know one thing, they are EXTREMELY root sensitive unlike Butyagrus. I had 4 come up in a communal pot and transplanted them and 3 promptly shrivelled up.

I had the same thing happen with plain old B. eriospatha seedlings - must be the maternal influence!!

I also had four B. e. x S. g. sprout so far. One quickly died before it was a week or so old, one is trying to decide if it likes me, and two are healthy. I too have had trouble with Butia eriospatha seedlings. Probably because I have no trouble with other Butia's and so tend to not give them as good care as with other more valued seed.

Here is a pic from some of my seedlings. Very good germination rate. When the weather gets warmer I will tranplant them. Thanks Nigel for your warning, I will do it with extreme caution, don't want to lose these!

Mine thankfully lifted from the germination media when the root emerged so that I could pot it up immediately with low stress.

Matt, they have a very thick long initial root much like Syagrus glaucescens ,its also very brittle like SG. When you tip out those seedlings from that pot as I did, they will break at the ends and die. I think the soil needs to be washed out carefully with a hose.

Nigel is the Butia specialist !!! I really cannot say anything about differences in tap roots of Butia and Syagrus glaucescens. Very interesting that it inherited this characteristic from its " dad" :Syagrus glaucescens!rolleyes.gif

Alberto,

Any updated pics of your seedlings? How do these look/ feel compared to other butyagrus seedlings?

Is it Butyagrus or Butiagrus? I always forget. I remember there was a thread on the naming convention for this hybrid.

Thanks!

I got cute with a space heater on a cold night and burned it bad. That damage plus some other cold and stress knocked it out. It saw low 20s with ice and wet snow.

A little palm for it´s age. Mother Butia was beginning to fruit at the age of 5-6 years. I´ll transplant some of my palms B. erio x S. glauc to places where they can be seen in the garden.

Are you attempting to do again Alberto?

Yes I collected S. glaucescens pollen that is frozen and the butias are flowering now. I´ll try again on a very silver B. catarinensis
