I was just reading the Areca vestiaria thread and got to wondering about thinning out clumping palms and wether or not

the wound of the cut stem should be treated with a fungicide or the like.

I am constantly thinning out a grove of D. lutescens without any treatment and haven't seen any negative symptoms yet,

but not sure if I'm inviting problems someday down the road.

Any experience good or bad? Any tips or techniques?

Done the same with golden canes and macarthurs, no probs there. I wouldn't touch Areca palms though, why would you ?

Not necessarily to thin out A. vestiaria, although in the right situation I don't see why not. C.renda is thinned out all the time

to highlight the color.

I was actually thinking more of Ptychosperma which sometimes can be untidy looking with so many trunks.

Trimmed all of our Ptychosperma macarthurii so that each had only 6 stems when we planted them 2 years ago (15 gal x 7 and 5 gal x 4) thinking that would direct growth to the remaining stems. They ain't dead yet, and all have put out new stems.
