I can remember eating at Taco Bell in the very early 1970's and loved it.

I want to get some of the old big picture menus that told people how to pronounce the food. (tah-co, burr-ree-toe, toe-stah-da) great fun and memories.

I also worked at one in 1980/81 that blew up in Colorado. It was only open a month and had a propane explosion that blew out the front wall and the roof collapsed. It also helped change the uniforms as the uniforms melted to some of the girls working there (early in the morning) :(

I can find Argentinean & Brazilian...but no Mexican...other than T B.

Paul - I've had Taco Johns in Iowa and found it three times better than any Taco Bell I've tried. mrlooney.gif

Mike - If you want some good Mexican food you need to try some spots in Homestead next time you are down that way.

I bet Ken Johnson could recommend 4 or 5 down his way.

El Toro Taco across from the Homestead police station on Krome is good. You can even bring in your own cooler of beer in the restaurant. I've been going there for about 25+ years, family owned too! drool.gif

Well one day Campbell (that's his name) inserted a note into the the wrapper of a gorgeous girl's BUH-REE-TOE (only 29¢) that said something like "if you wanna party come around back". Within an hour this huge guy shows up with the family (and beautiful daughter(!) in tow and slams the burro against the front window. He was slightly P-O'd and was threatening to tear the responsible party a new rectal orifice.

I gather you can guess who ended up with the "special" burrito.

For those of you not from CA, Taco Bell is not Mexican food. It's American fast food trying to be Mexican style. Don't get me wrong, I like Taco Bell, but it ain't Mexican.

First time I had Taco Bell was in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1978.

It was good, and I've been in love ever since, through all the rebranding, re-doing, and spokespeople like Little Richard and Willie Nelson.

Those picture menus with pronunciation guide were necessary, in the 'Murkin Midwest. Lima is Peru; Lima (Lime-ah) is in Ohio. A crunchy Tay-ko, anyone?

Hmmmm funny...Dave, I tried TB in Indiana also, around the same time...

Here in Brazil taco means the wooden stick we play snooker with, and also the wooden small pieces used as floor...maybe I was badly suggested with the translation but for me it was not love at the first bite...

My favs in terms of Gladys Knight's fast food (killing me softly...) are certainly a multi-piece Kentucky fried chicken dinner, with corn on cob, a hot Wendy's chili bowl (in Florida, not in Texas) and (this last one only when in deep despair and really nothing else around:) McFish and small fries...mon menu degustation is finished with a full Dairy Queen banana split (not sure if they still have DQ's around in US though, haven't seen them in California last time...no taco bells ringing here in NE Brazil yet, thanks...

Interesting how this has become more of a review of the cuisine rather than the Taco Bell history I intended. :lol:

But I will say, I have fond memories of "two Enchirito's with 1 scoop of sauce and extra cheese and sour cream and OLIVES" (olives now gone.. :( )

When you are 9-10 years old it takes a lot of talking to convince your parents of the need for the "extras". (at least mine in the early 70's it did)

Don't know about now but back then the yellow cheese was not American, it was a cheap grade of Swiss. The beans cane in 50 lb sacks and had to be sorted for rocks and sticks. Then they were put in a big pan along with about 10 lbs of lard, cooked and then mixed with huge cake beaters. When we got bored we'd pitch pennies from a distance into the pot. Whoever could make a coin stand up in the beans won. Sometimes we couldn't find all the coins... We use to trade with the local Jack in the Box, tacos for burgs. Once we put some trash liners on the hot grill. This causes the bags to shrivel up into a perfect looking rendition of the fabled BellBurger. Wrapped 'em up and swapped. After that we had to start trading with KFC.

I remember "sorting the beans" and using a black and decker drill to "drill the beans" while cooking. I think the "real beans" taste better than the powdered stuff now. :(

We also had sour cream fights (at that time dispensed from a ketchup bottle type deal). Also had tortilla throwing contests too. (Could you stand in the back of the kitchen and hit the front window...? :D)

For couple weeks I had the glory job of "taco shell maker". I would go to several local TB's and fry up batches of taco and tostada shells.

    Go and visit Ken Johnson down in his neck of the woods. He took me to the homiest place I've ever been, complete with a rooster making whoopee with a number of hens in the parking lot, and salsa hot enough to incinerate your liver.
