Damn thing is still out there returning to the scene of the kroc crime! Problem is I was so mad I destroyed the well established tunnels so I'm having a hard time figuring out where to put anything.

Rob, I don't have that one. Where did you get it?

Found my Wilco stuff, can't find my "rod". :(

Bill, I have one. Paid $50 for the damn thing and it is worthless. Come and get it. I now use the same poison others use here and find their hole, get a long spoon and dump it far back as I can, then cover the hole. Killed two this way so far this spring. I had one bury about 5 trap attempts. Poison got him.

Well, I put a few pellets down a copper tube back about 4-6". Wasn't sure if the tube was just as much to prevent my "smell" as anything??

How do you guys know you got them with the poison? Does it smell or do they die on the spot?

Ditto. Usually happens within 1-3 days. I come out every day or two, and put stuff in any new holes. Within no time at all, no more mounds.

You mean I don't use it like a bow and arrow? Are you sure?

PS - We were not talking about your magic trap. We were talking about the bait rod.

I was at a friends house yesterday and she has 1 gopher in the entire yard. It's very easy to spot the progression from under the fence in a straight line out into the yard. Everyday there's a few more mounds further and further out. I was showing her how to find the main tunnel and we decided to put 2 pieces of minty gum down the hole. If it actually works I'd be surprised but we'll see soon enough.

Money well spent from my perspective. You just have to know how to use it, but I understand your limitations. My rod works great, I just poke it in the hole, give it a couple cranks, and out comes the payload. As and added plus, I don't even have to bend over like you.

Gotcha, that would make a difference. I just poke around hole with mine and when I find a tunnel, I get a positive "plunk" and I know I'm there. Soft soil would make this thing useless.

Nice work Bill! I know how large those Black Box traps are so that's a big gopher. I can't use those at my place, the ground is too rocky to get that thing into a hole.

There is no doubt gophers/ground squirrels eat Bismarckia.....today's inital walk through the garden evidenced my recently planted (with great effort) Bismarckia laying horizontal on the ground. The roots had been eaten completely to the base of the tree......

I don't know if I am angry, upset, shocked, or disappointed.......but I will not be good company today.

Bill,

For gopher control, I thought Shon had the best idea. He gives them a carrot and directions to your garden. Seems to work.

You know it's kind of funny reading this after hearing you complain about being bed ridden with back pain. I also only paid 25 bucks for this thing at the Homey, and it works great, or maybe I'm just imagining that the gophers disappear after it's use. I also bet I could place poison in gopher holes 5 to your one, all while comfortably standing. Getting on my knees to place gopher poison manually on 5 acres? Nahhh, I'll pass. As well, one of your mentors, Brent, is the person that turned me on to it, ask him if it was a waste. Game, set, match, you lose :mrlooney:

Unfortunately, this thread started after it was planted....even so, it is the very first palm I have lost to a burrowing varmint. I have no hole from which to start to look for this criminal rodent, except for the one at the side of the excavation atthe site of the crime. Ran 15 minute of water into the tunnel, and it collapsed about 8 feet from the hole. I'm going to keep a lookout for this evil beast, but it could be living in any of 3 other yards, but not here, I think.

I will post photos of the dead, body if I get it, with the graphic detail of a victim of the Inquisition, no chance to repent or convert, either.

The maccabee pinched this guy in the belly, tethering him to the spot - note the concentric digging pattern; he was still alive when I found him several days later - this was in the garden of Fred Zone 10a (remember him?). I threw him to the hawks (the gopher - not Fred Zone 10a). Cycle of life and all that.
