Thanks Gileno....I have one question...

Here if Florida, many of the Royals fall to lightning during our summer rainy season. Does this area of Brazil not have lightning storms? It appears not one royal has been lost!

Great tour.....thank you.

Hi Rick,

There are lightning storms in Rio, I've been through a scaying one a long time ago...

The oldest and tallest Roystonea oleracea planted in JBRJ (The "Palma Mater" of 1808) was actually hit and decapitated in 1972 at the age of 164 yo !!. They've preserved the remaining 39.5 meters of entire trunk as a horizontal monument at the Museum there). How about a Tiki with that one, hmmm? :)

Gileno,

Without a doubt, this is one of the few world class gardens in the world. Thanks for sharing your pictures. I always enjoy the famous shot of looking up into the long, very tall Royals that are planted there. I for one, look forward to coming to Brazil in 2010 for the biennial.

Thanks Jeff. I'm also looking forward to meeting you and many other palm affictionates from this forum next year in Rio. Hopefully IPS members will enjoy a great Biennial meeting there.

Here are some more photos of JBRJ, these were taken last june, by another palm collector, Liana Mendonça, during our visit.
