The final round . . .

post-208-1228784784_thumb.jpg

Bill noted the "palm pain" in this picture.

Bill's point is well-taken. Look closely and you'll see a very very sad looking Chambeyronea, with its spear (and not much else) visible in front of the remaining tree's trunk.

Here's the same scene today, January 2016.

That sad palm spear in the center is my flowering Chambey.

Note the Margaret Thatcher Iron Lady Azalea in the foreground, still there, none the worse for wear. The Chambey's trunk is directly behind it.

And, here's the Stump.

Still there, still hard, no signs of decay. Deodar cedar wood is tough. It was so thick we couldn't quite saw all the way through it; there was a bit of wood in the center the saw blade didn't reach, and the final piece of trunk had to be twisted off.

Interesting. After looking at Streetview in Southern CA for awhile, I've noticed big cedars all over the old neighborhoods. I'm hardly familiar with horticulture in CA, but can anyone explain why these were planted ad-naseum? Convey status in the wealthy neighborhoods? Replicate look of other major US cities? I remember seeing a comment on DG regarding the numerous plantings of the Southern Magnolia speculating they were trying to replicate the look of the Southeast. Still seems like kind of an odd combination with the many palms to me.

Good question!

I think it was a gesture to easterners who like conifers. Pines, spruces, etc., that thrive in a place like New York will not grow well in LA.

But, Deodar cedars do very well. They'll take high heat, the odd freeze, and don't have to have high humidity. (They're native to northern India.)

Christmas Tree Lane in Altadena has a long line of Deodar cedars, that are something like 120 years old.

Thanks!

But it was not me who did the removal of the Tree of Lust and Desire.

It was Palmazon.

If he were to go, I could join and supervise from the ground and assist in the disposal the wine and jamón!

I think Disney planted a lot of deodars at their World back in the beginning.  I haven't looked much at the landscaping, or Disney (Leu Gardens is more fun), so don't know how they've done.  Don't recall a deodar at Leu.

Fla. climate center: 100-119 days>85 F
USDA 1990 hardiness zone 9B
Current USDA hardiness zone 10a
4 km inland from Indian River; 27º N (equivalent to Brisbane)

Central Orlando's urban heat island may be warmer than us

I believe they planted a whole forest of them at the new Beauty and the Beast Castle area a few years ago. As far as I've seen they've done really well.

Some, but they all recovered very nicely.

A couple took bad hits to the growth buds from falling limbs. I can't even tell which they were now.

Nice man.  Well it's always a fun exiting day in the life of a palm at Daves House! Should have had them cut that Gigas in the powerlines as well!

I got Brahea Silver 5 ga I decided I have no room for.  I'll try to bring it up next trip up to your garden and maybe we can barter for something in your back yard.

Looks great. Very tropical. And your turn of phrase has no equal on this forum, in my opinion.
