Don, just got to this very interesting thread today. I love these kinds of travel logs showing a bit of everything. I had to get out a map to see exactly where you went. Naturally enjoyed seeing all those palms as well. I guess you know there are a lot of us that envy you being able to travel and explore these rather remote areas of Brazil. Thanks for sharing your trip with us and allowing us to learn a little more about life in those parts. I'm already looking forward to your next excursion!

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Great pictorial, Don. I like studying each photo. What is the temperature there now? It looks like if you were a kid growing up down there that you would have a blast exploring everything. The buildings are very interesting as well.

Thanks for the tour.

Cindy,

The temperatures range from 30 to 38 C in the daytime and 20 to 24 C at night most of the year. We are heading into the rainy season now and sometimes the daytime temperatures stay below 30 C, around 28 or so. Needless to say my son does not wear much clothes.

Don, great photo documentary as usual. The Euterpe plantation is incredible. You live in an amazing beautiful country which I'd love to visit one day!

Don,

What a spectacular thread and great photography! And that Euterpe plantation must be quite a sight! :)

Don, I always make time to look at your Amazon threads, what a unique place. I felt oddly comfortable and peaceful when I was on the Rio Negro for eight days, despite the warmth. Maybe I was a cabloco in a previous incarnation? Or was it the immense vistas everywhere?

Thanks everyone. It was a good way to spend a Saturday away from home. One of the best sights for me was the Euterpe plantation. Who knows maybe I can have one of my own some day.

It looks amazing, what a great thread! A true taste of Amazonia, something straight out of an adventure novel. I would love to visit someday, the vibrant colours look enticing (like moths to a light).
