Its quite common for seeds to lodge in the boots of certain palms and they germinate there.

In most cases the boot palms die off before developing the mature leaf.

I saw this today where a large Butia capitata had about 100 seedlings in its boots

Has anyone seen an advanced palm growing in a boot? Do they ever grow like a strangler fig ?

Pictures welcomed.

There is one down the street growing in a Jelly Palm. I tried to repatriate it once but it was fully entrenched. I always check on it when I pass by. I figure the Gardner will chop it off one of these days.

Hi Sol,

I was thinking more of the palm seedlings that grow in the parent tress boots

I saw a big oak tree the other day with a small (20cm) Trachycarpus growing on one of the branches, it looked really bizarre.

I see a lot of Phoenix dacts with an awful mess of new growth coming from the lower trunk. I assumed it was a suckering thing, but now I'm wondering.
