One of the best features about the cinder concept ...

it lessens the mosquitoes by 90 % or more ...

This is something I have wondered about Hawaii (especially the wetter areas).

Are the mosquitos really bad? Is it impossible to go outside without getting mauled by them?

And, what is the general climate in Kapoho? Is it about like Hilo? Is it warm enough for air conditioning?

Aloha Larry ...

At Our Place around the house in January and Feb. i had the most mosquitoes i've had in since we started with the cinder ...

i was there for 5 weeks ... i saw maybe 25 - 30 and was sucked on two or three times ...

i wear just shorts and no shirt or less and i'm outside most of the time

Out by the property line they are noticable during the longer wetter periods ...

Our place is getting more shade ... which they like ... but we have good air flow and the black cinder drys quickly

and mosquitoes like low ground moisture ...

As for Kapoho Climate ...

Mostly in the 80's during the day year around ... with a tradewind

maybe some low 90's in the summer ...

winter lows ... some low 50's but mostly in the 60's

[ some say This Kapoho Point has the cleanest air in the world ...

i don't know about that but it is very pleasant ]

No heater ... no air conditioning ...

During the summer if the tradewinds stall ...

then i use an overhead fan part of the night on low ...

or just sleep outside ...

We recorded Our rainfall since 1995 ...

1 year was 52 inches ... 3 years between 100 to 105 ...

a few in the high 80's the rest in the 90's.

Most of the rain is between 3AM and 9 AM ...

We hardly have a day where you can't be outside on the property ... fooling around

It'a hard for people to believe who live only 5 miles away ...

that they're in rain and cloud cover ...

and we have had Sun and Blue Skys ...

but that is how these micro climate area's are ...

We're on the East point if you look at a map ...

The clouds back up from the big volcano's toward us ...

Most of the time it's Sun with blue sky and some clouds rolling thru ...

Chalemchart,

Pauleen, who has been an IPS member for more than 50 years, lives in Ventura, CA (near Los Angeles) and has owned her Hawaii property since about 1990. Unfortunately, due to health issues, she probably won't be able to come back to enjoy her palms here in Hawaii, and that's the reason for the decision to put the property on the market.

Bo-Göran

Jeff Marcus sent out a flyer on her property with my last order. I was open-mouthed taking in its beauty!!!! It really isn't a bad price either, for such a wonderful collection and the house is beautiful too. Too bad it can't turn out to be like Fairchild's "Kampong", no? Wow! What an estate; unbelievable!

"If i was staying i would now start adding color plants and some islands of ground cover ...

The conditions are there to support that now ..."

Unless it's to personal, why are you not staying, I'd never leave other then to gather food and supplies.

Aloha ... Redant

I Love it there ... but i was doing this for mom ... i'm not really a palm nut ... just karmicly born to two of them ...

my son at 23 years old didn't want to tied down ... i understood ]

i would of helped him ... if he wanted it.

i was setting out to be a wanderer ... living in a van ...

when dad passed on ... in 1975 ...

i plan to do that ... visiting monasteries ... and such ...

Never know what might happen ...

i may end up back in Kapoho ... it's ideal area for a VanGuy ...

Maybe the new owner will let me take care of the weeds ...

i have the know how and actually Love doing it there ...

Terry, pretty incredible if you ask me.

When you say it is right for understory stuff, is that because the cinder breaks doing over time to form somewhat like a soil? Sorry for the questions, just curious on how the cinder works over time.

Aloha Len ...

More for the shade and that the bigger palms can be taken off the drip and the water can be used for starting

the understory ... plus now i would have time ...

As for the break down of the cinder and it's qualities ... i don't know much really ...

All Our palms got a 5ft by 5ft by 2ft deep hole ... [ tractor bucket was 5 ft. ] filled with dirt or a dirt MacNut mulch combo ...

to get kick started ... mom wasn't getting any younger ...

but we have had many seeds sprout and grow and start getting big in just cinder and no extra water ...

They grow but not as fast ...

Bo, I'm peeking in here once in a while. Bill, the answer to your question is there is no Dypsis sp white stem at the Sullivan garden, this would be a great place to plant one.
