I thought it might be chinensis, but I have never seen one with a trunk that pretty before.  It would appear they achieve much more beauty in filtered sun down here, than they do in full sun.

Things are still showing the stress put on them in late 2005 by Hurricane Rita, but the gardens were beautiful non-the-less.

Some of the plantings there go back 100 years or so.

I would think seeds would be no problelm there.  I do plan to check for them as the time comes.

Keith, Thank you for the outstanding tour. You get a real feel for the Louisiana By-yo.The Mystery guy does look like a Livinstonia chinesis but it must be ancient because I have never seen one that tall with a rather incredible trunk.(that ringing look is something I have never seen)Also,I have never seen Sabals marrying into those beautiful Louisiana Oaks. All we get down here are Ficus swallowing Sabals.

The color from the flowers and the contrast of that swamp is deep.I am suprised that some "Exotics" are not attempted because I got to believe they would work.(ie.Triangle,Queen,Bizzie,Bucaneer....)

What you look for is what is looking

I did not turn off towards the factory as there was much construction going on.    It would be early for the chiles here anyway.  Now is planting time.  I plan to return to get some pictures of that later in the year and then add to this thread.

It takes me less than 10 minutes to get to Avery Island so my wife challenged me to do a pictoral documentary of 12 months at Avery Island.  I just might take her up on it.  These pictures were taken in the middle of a clear day with straight up sun, so the harsh contrast and sun angles came nowhere close to doing the gardens justice.

12 Months in Avery Island's Jungle Garden might be cool I think.  Anyone think I should do it?

Maybe if I get to know them, I can get them to embrace a little palm diversity too.

The mystery palm is Livistona Tobascoensis :) In all honesty that doesn't look like a run of the mill chinensis. Most of the Chinensis I have seen tend to have a more robust trunk and more compact leaf arrangement (even in full shade) than the one pictured. That one tends to look more like a Livistona merrilli although it's probably not that. If you look at post number 34 that is most likely a chinensis grown in shade. The mystery one in 35 does resemble a chinensis because of the drooping leaflets but everything else does not match up perfectly.

With that being said. Great post Keith. I especially enjoyed the sabals growing in odd places and the croc/alligator! Crickey!

The rookery.  The story.  Note the old Sabals

"Saving the Egrets

E.A. McIlhenny, or "Mr. Ned" as he was affectionately known, founded a bird colony in the 1890s — later called Bird City — after plume hunters slaughtered egrets by the thousands for feathers to make fashionable ladies' hats. Mr. Ned gathered up eight young egrets, raised them in captivity on the Island, and released them in the fall to migrate across the Gulf of Mexico. The following spring the birds returned to the Island with others of their species - a migration that continues to this day, as thousands of snowy white egrets and other water birds return to Bird City each spring. This vast, protected rookery owes its existence to Mr. Ned."

Really great pictures Keith. I credit all the different Sabal and Serenoa species as giving Florida, and a lot of the deep south U.S., the overall tropical look and feel. There is a palm every where the eye might look in the south since there all palms native here and they actually will grow in every crack and crevice unaided by the the hand of man. Truly native palms. Also, the long hot, humid spring, summer and fall combined with the mostly warm winters lends to the tropical vibe as well in the deep south. I love Sabals, they are what got me into palms in the first place!

Also, if that palm is more than 20 years old, it would mean it survived the close to single digit freeze of 89.  Good looking and cold hardy.

Your mistery palm is a Livistona chinensis.-Its naturalized up there?

It seems Louisiana state in the USA has a really nice climate for grow tropicals palms but not many things are hear to happen there, most palms news and members seems to come from California, Florida or Arizona.-

I like the Tillandsias falling from the large tree branches, it remember me the movie Forest Gump!

Louisiana is classified as "humid sub-tropical".   Actually many of the plants that do best here are from Southern Japan where the L. chinensis originates.

Interestingly, parts of Argentina also seems to have a similar climate as well.
