Hi everyone,

Last year on spring, I visited Arizona and was looking for a natural Washingtonia filifera oasis which is near Wickenburg. But nobody (not palm amators) was able to give me any information about its location, then I didn't see it ! The next time I will ask someone some informations before...

Does somebody have any photos, informations or/and Washingtonia seeds from there ? Thanks.

try 18 miles south of quartzite az. on u.s. route 95, then east for 8 miles, entrance into kofa mountains, you could also use google erath to track down palm canyon az,

hi Michel

I think you might have heard of the palm grove at Castle Hot Springs which is east of Wickenburg about 15 or 20 miles. It is easier to reach from the road that is near Lake Pleasant than from Wickenburg...

I don't think its an natural grove but one that was planted around 1890 to 1930 when Castle Hot Spring was an resort. The grove is near the hot spring and the creek that run through the old resort...

Hi Chris,

Thanks so much for all these informations about Washingtonia filifera in Arizona. I believed that these palms were growing in the wild. I read these words in DESERT PALM OASIS from J W CORNETT if I remember rightly.

In the same way, are palms located in the fishtail canyon in the Kofa mountains growing in the wild or not ?

Greetings

Michel

Hi Michel

The Washingtona palms in the Kofa mts are native wild growing palms. Washingtonia filifera palms were one of the first palms planted in AZ which seed originating from the palm canyons in California.

Washingtonia filifera has naturialize some of the waterway in the low desert around the state, from birds dropping seeds.

Hi Chris,

Thanks again.

I spent good time in your state and under your hot sun. To reach 112F (car thermo) at the beginning of May is not common in my region, but it's however a nice temp to visit Desert Bot Gardens !

Have a good day

I know this thread is 12 years old, but I have the information on this grove. It is posted in another thread called “Castle screen Filifera.”  On the off-Chance you’re still checking PalmTalk, your info is there.
