I dont know why but this is something I have never seen at a box store in my town is a sabal species.. I found this little Texas Palmetto yesterday and for $12.98 I couldnt pass it up.. Whats the going rate on one of these? 3 gallon.. I guess its hard to sell sabals in a pot since they are so slow.. I wish theyd get some feild grown plants in stock they'd probably be dirt cheap.. Im cant wait to see whats gonna hit the shelves next month.. I also found a nice fat little w. robusta at HD for 8.99 the other day in a 3 gallon pot.. thought it was too good to pass up even though I have a bunch of 5 and 7 gallons waiting to get planted..

Extremely root bound.. This little guy cant wait to get in the ground..

Does the trunk on these get fatter than a sabal palmetto?

No where near frost free.. But hopefully someday when I move further south..

Feef,

Your not going to believe this, but I was just about to start a thread on Texas Sabals.  I just picked one up myself about 2 days ago at Walmart for 11 dollars.  Looks like the same size as yours.  I saw quite a few there mixed in with the Washingtonias.

I was going to post my pictures for everyone to ID, to make sure I got a Sabal Mexicana.  That is what I wanted.  I know Texana and Mexicana are supposed to be the same thing, but I wanted the experts to weigh in to make sure that's what I got (Mexicana).  Here's mine I just picked up.

To answer your question, yes the trunk is fatter than Sabal Palmetto.  About 1.5 times fatter, imo.  I think Florida Sabals have smaller crowns too.  But you can definitely tell their related.

Where does the sticker say your plant is from? Mine came from Twin Oaks Nursery, Wilmer Alabama.. Probably from the same grower.. Thats funny I wonder if my wal mart will get them.. Is yours heavily root bound cause mines about to bust out of the pot..

I wonder if my neighbor down the street has one cause the trunk on it is about 3 times the size of most sabals I see around here and it has retained every last boot.. It is huge the crown is also very full and every frond is green as opposed to most of the sabals locally.. Ill have to get a picture later..

Greenhand, How often do you fertilize yours?

Got that at home depot for 200.00 feild grown wrapped in burlap, they had to use a forklift to put it in my truck, you could feel the shocks lowering when they sat it in the bed. there were fronds hanging in front of my windsheild while driving down the street. people were pointing and laughing at us.  just a regular two wheel dolly worked ok.

These are Sabal mexicana, right? I find them frequently at the big box stores in Mobile during the summer.

It came from some nursery in TX.  Most of our palms are homegrown in S. TX.

Here one of my neighbors medium sized Mexicana's (about 15-20 ft. tall).

Here's one that's pretty old and probably at least 40-45 ft tall.

How did you get it out of the truck.. Ive seen people tie the plants to other big trees and let it fall out as they pull away.. that seems like it would really hurt the rootball..
