so everyone knows they do not make it past winter - they always die- except for a few stunted examples. The Newport palm being the most famous - yadeee yadee yadeee. ok - now looking on line - I see NOTHING about anyone doing a transplant of a large already fruiting palm to southern California. if anyone has first hand info (not just speculation or guess work) or can show me anything on line where this has been attempted and failed I will climb under a rock. growing one up to coconuts - no already have them and it lives - ???

Hey guys, Its been a while since I posted anything but I have read a lot of the threads. It will be 4 years ago in July I bought a coco from EBay that came from Puerto Rico. I don't know it's variety but sure someone will know. I'll give the most detailed information leading up to today. When it arrived it was about 16 inches tall coming out of the husk with no visible roots yet. I quickly planted it in its current home, a 20 gallon pot. I used pure sand bought from HD. The sand sold where i live is very course and rocky. Not a fine powder so very good drainage. I kept the palm for the first two years outside under a patio in partial sun. I brought it inside …

Our Hawaiian jungle 1 2 3 4

I have posted quite a few photos over the last several months, but most of them have been close-ups of various palm details. It occurred to me that I should also do the opposite: post a few photos showing our unique environment. Not only are we in the middle of a lowland Hawaiian rainforest, but because of the volcanic origin of the area (well, actually the entire island!), the topography is very interesting with lots of ups and downs. I'll start out with two photos. The first shows a group of Marojejya darianii, shadowed by a massive Tetraplassandra hawaiiensis, which I understand is a rather rare endemic tree. We have three of them on the property. The palm trunk to t…

My wife and I bought a block of land 1\2 acre on March 2005. We sold our house and moved out in September 2005. It has been a long and frustrating process getting our plans done and house built, looks like we will move in July this year!! We have been renting for nearly two years Here is a couple of photos from my old house, steep block, and new block of land flat and private. Cheers Sol old house/garden http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/nomolos/Pictu.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/nom.../Picture093.jpg

South Florida Palm Society Spring Garden Tour Miami, Florida Saturday, March 27th, 2010 The South Florida Palm Society will organize and present a garden tour about twice a year. These tours will often include visits to private collections, residences and properties not often seen by outside eyes. The tours offer unique opportunities to see what palms and exotic plants certain veteran collectors have stashed away in behind their gates and walls. The four collections we were visiting today are located in the greater Miami area and included two that I had not seen before. In these instances, the yards you will see represent many years, if not, decades of hard work; gr…

This is Mehmet from Istanbul, Turkey. Last year I germinated a coconut but it burned and died because of extreme hot. Then this February I bought another coconut from supermarket to germinate and it goes really well and fast. It is almost 2.5 months. What do you suggest to do? keeping in freezer bag is ok or need to plant it to flowerpot?

By now, I've given away lots of the seeds, and I've learned the mostly good fates of many. So, good, bad, told before, or not, share your Chamadorea radicalis seed sprouting experiences, even if you didn't get them from me. I have a lot by the way. If you've had bad luck, maybe we can help change it. Palmy love to all!

I love Archontophoenix palms, and I am sure many of you do too. I couldn't find an Archontophoenix specific thread, so I thought I'd make one in hopes of people showing off their Archontophoenix palms, any species! Here is my Archontophoenix cunninghamiana, which has been thriving for me indoors and outdoors (when its warm and sunny enough, like today). It's small, but is growing quickly. I am surprised at how much it seems to not care about being in cooler conditions.

A last look at the palms in Houston 1 2 3 4

Made a mad dash from College Station to central Houston this afternoon to bid farewell to the plants I've been observing for years. Apologies for the lighting/haphazard photos, was in a real rush trying to chase the sun. This is the Houston I've always known (wasn't alive during the 80s). I guess I always took the queen palms for granted, very sad to see them go. Along Main St and Montrose, the medians are all tarped and iirc, they are planted with 'Little John' bottlebrush. The ironic thing is that the surrounding areas are full of emerald green gingers, green bananas, cordylines, kalanchoes, papayas etc...you would never expect it was going to drop to near 10F in a few …

Well, Summer's half over so I thought it would be a good time to post my annual garden photos. This summer has been balmy and humid and most of my palms are in high gear right now and growth should continue through November before most screech to a halt. I'm downloading lots of pics so please be patient. Yours truly and a fat Livistona chinensis front porch area view from front porch Licuala ramsayi and R. regia and small Dictosperma to right

My garden in Cadiz, South of Spain 1 2 3 4

Hi! I´ve often followed topics on this site and have learnt a lot through it, but I am finally daring to post a few pics of my own garden in Cadiz, south of Spain, where I live, right next to the coast. The climate isn´t too bad here, maybe 9b or 10a but we get some pretty bad dry winds which tropical palms (and other plants) don´t enjoy much... Only a couple of frosts this winter, but palms like my Dypsis Lutescens or Pritchardia Hildebrandtii took quite a bit of a beating... Hope you like my pics

Rhopalostylis Sapida in Habitat, New Zealand 1 2 3 4

Just had the chance to explore some of the mainland Nikau Habitat on the West Coast of the South Island, and collect some seed. Never spent much time looking into this palm in habitat but it's incredible the variation depending on location, above/below canopy, and distance to the coast. Underneath the canopy they spread very wide, almost like Coconut or bangalows... there was many with green fronds below horizontal. After getting above canopy they turn into the typical shuttlecock shape. Also amazing to see hundreds of seedlings like grass around some really old ones in the forest. Enjoy..

Does anyone have pictures of Licualas? 1 2 3 4

There are so many varieties of palms I'd like to get to know them one genus at a time. I hope you can post pictures of your plants (not taken out of the web because everyone else would most probably have seen those already) if you can add some comments on how you grow them (or how you've killed them) that would be helpful. Since these will be of the same genus it would be easier to relate the various comments on how to grow the plants. If your pictures had had something in it that could show the relative size of the plant that would be great. because most of the time pictures are of plants going solo so you have no idea how big they really are. I you have some …
