The 2009 growing season's about to come to a end here in the big city of Brandon, FL. I've pretty much gotten all of my goodies into the ground, and am leaving it up to the palm gods to handle it... I'll do what I can, but it's all up to mother nature now... I just thought I'd like a thread to look back on my plantings, and compare results as time goes on... I reckon I'll start with my front yard which has dense oak canopy... Everything here gets about 3hrs full sun, and the rest of the days is filtered bright light... This H. verschaffeltii was originally planted out back just before winter last year with a H. lagenicaulis. The Bottle didn't make it, and …

Has PT reached a consensus about the cold hardiness of alfies, the "cold coconut" is it 9a, 9b, or, God forbid 10a where you can grow the real deal anyway? My initial impression was that it was easy 9b, maybe even 9a. Since then it seems that their cold tolerance was perhaps over rated. I'm increasingly getting the impression that it can survive 25f, but with a heavy frost it may well succumb to the upper twenties. I'm starting to wonder if the "cold coconut" reputation comes from the fact that it grows well in CA, which could well mean that it is cool hardy, but not necessarily more cold hardy than a nucifera. Thanks

This is a really nice palm. Mine is still strap leaved, and would love to see some examples of different stages of it's growth. If you have one - let's see it!

I've been meaning to start this thread for awhile now, but have been too busy with the work that this new property has needed to have much free time to post about it. We are rained in here on the Big Island for a few days, so the time has come to finally document this project and what will soon be our new home here on the Big Island of Hawaii. Quick recap, our family moved from Fallbrook, CA to Hilo, Hawaii in 2017. We have a great home in town on 1/2 acre of land. You can read all about the creation of that garden here. It's amazing how quickly you can fill up 1/2 acre here, especially when there was already some existing fruit trees and landscaping that we ha…

Here is the image gallery of Len Geiger's spectacular, extraordinary garden in Vista, California, in full Pandovision(tm). Pictures were taken yesterday during a Hibiscus Society tour when a few Palmtalkers were able to sneak in as well. Special thanks to Len @LJG for opening up his amazing property and allowing me to post the images here for all of us to enjoy. If you prefer (or if you're using a mobile phone), you can browse the entire album HERE (http://imgur.com/a/HPoN8)

Because it's so cold in N. Calif. during winter not much grows except winter grasses and weeds. Yesterday I made a great discovery, as the Butia X Parajubaea has its first bloom spathe. It is about a foot long and is a dull brown color and is about 4 feet above the ground. It is growing sideways at a 45 degree angle from the trunk as a Parajubaea would. I immediately called Patrick Schafer to tell him the good news, and he said as far as he knows this is the first of his many hybrids that has bloomed. The palm is about 9 or 10 years old. I will keep you updated. Dick

Do any of you grow Palms inside, or is it just me? (It doesn't seem that there are any others in New England on this forum) - If you do, I'm curious what kinds you grow, and which do well inside with artificial light. What have you tried, that does not work? I grow Sabals, Chamaedorea, Trachycarpus, Veitchii, and Phoenix, and have seedlings of several other genera, all growing inside, and they all do great. The only ones I've had issues with are Dypsis. Encephalartos, Cycas, Ceratozamia, Zamia, Macrozamia, and Dioon all do just fine inside, as well, which surprised me. (Never know till you try!) Just thought I'd see what your experiences are with indoor-grow…

If you had to choose only one palm to plant that would grow in your garden what would it be? I would probably have to go with kentiopsis piersoniorum for my climate.

I don't mean to intrude with this post but with so many varieties of seeds/plants that you offer and you guys obviously have a much wider access to palms than ordinary hobbyists like us-- I am really curious as to what palms you have in your private /personal collection? What are your pride and joys? Come on guys -- brag a little.

Syagrus insignis vs S. weddelliana Between 1995 and 2010 the species Lytocaryum insigne (now again Syagrus insignis) was treated as synonym for the "correct" term Lytocaryum weddellianum (now Syagrus weddelliana). In this thread I am trying to document the differences between these two species during their first years since germination. Literature discussing the genus Lytocaryum (Noblick & Lorezi 2010) and its transfer to Syagrus (Noblick & Meerow 2015) can be downloaded as pdf: http://www.palms.org/palmsjournal/2010/v54n1p5_17.pdf http://www.researchgate.net/publication/281374491_The_transfer_of_the_genus_Lytocaryum_to_Syagrus (or via IPS) It would be very nice i…

I was reading up on Southern California's history with Palms and how they grow so tall and I came upon this article. It states that LA isn't replacing their Washingtonia Robusta and Canary Island Date Palm trees! They state only certain tourist-oriented areas will retain palms. Instead they aim to replace these with lousy Oak and other species. I hate this, Southern California is notorious for its skyscraper Washingtonia Robusta! Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard are prime examples. They suit the SoCal climate perfectly since they require little water and take up next to no space to plant. W. Robusta are from Northern Mexico/Sonora Dessert, so I don't know…

By now, I've given away lots of the seeds, and I've learned the mostly good fates of many. So, good, bad, told before, or not, share your Chamadorea radicalis seed sprouting experiences, even if you didn't get them from me. I have a lot by the way. If you've had bad luck, maybe we can help change it. Palmy love to all!

Hi group. My name is Kurt. I love this forum, and as such I'd like to start compiling an online record of my first garden. As you may or may not know, I was lucky enough to secure a block of land in the Daintree Rainforest, in controversial Cow Bay. All blocks that haven't been cleared or built on, or haven't got a current development application, have now been render never to be built on and now so called protected (which has upset a lot of people)! Its been an interesting 4 years - not as 'romantic' as I thought it would be (dealing with relentless growth of feral weeds, the rain, the dry, destruction by feral pigs, and lunacy by council workers)! We moved up from Herv…
