I just took an a/c break from trimming seed infructescenses from palms in our Caribbean Garden to report a curious finding. My rugged Sabal miamiensis x mexicana or x maritima hybrid, which normally would have 1,000s of developing seeds well on their way to a late Aug/early Sep harvest, is devoid of seeds. It put out inflorescences but these are turning brown and shriveling. It appears the whole 2023 crop of seeds will fail. The palm is otherwise healthy and growing. I can only speculate that the palm is putting its energy toward recovering from the effects of Ian. Even though it appeared to shrug off those brutal cat 4/5 winds, this palm and perhaps others like it still …

Botanical Treasures Palm Nursery
by Palmy- 3 replies

I remember this wonderful website that had palms for wholesale and also had really good prices for single palm sale. All of a sudden their website just went down ages ago. I was wondering if anybody knew of this place. I think they were in Homestead Florida, and I vaguely remember something about a hurricane or something. Anybody know exactly what happened to it? And who may have owned the nursery? Do they belong/post here at IPS? Thanks.

Loose palm
by Hollywood Palms- 3 replies
Hi All, I have an almost trunking, eight foot kentia that is suddenly leaning a bit, from the ground and it seems that it is "loose at the roots." I have tied it up and it is still green, hardy and pushing out fronds. I think that it may have been hit by one of the blind, stupid deer in my neighborhood. Any suggestions? Thanks, David

Any Imperial Valley growers on this forum?

Unfortunately had to give up on my dream of moving to Hilo, HI after I could not find a suitable place to rent after home prices pretty much doubled overnight in August 2021, which is conveniently right when I started looking for a place. Anyways, it was a very difficult decision, so I'm trying to only look forward and see the positive side of things. I now moved to El Centro, CA, which is definitely not the most forgiving climate in both summer and winter, however I have seen some promising signs, such as a multitude of blooming Delonix regia and two mature (however slightly stunted) Roystonea regia. There are also many healthy looking Bismarckia as well as a few Sa…

I have a Washingtonia robusta, three years old with yellowish white, dots all over the tips and bases of its Fronds. I’m not sure if they can get spider mites but I have recently got a majesty palm with spider mites. Just wanted to check this for my palm as I will have to bring it inside and it might get worse in the next 10 or so days.

Coco de Mer- Dead or Alive ?
by Manolitus- 3 replies

Hello All, Back in 2006, my cousin and I went to Seychelles for a trip of a life time. We brought back 5 nuts. He kept two, I kept three. One of his FINALLY germinated around 2009 the other one died. One out of my three died. I know this for sure because it became hollow. SOOOO, I have had two nuts in the ground, in the same spot since 2006. And nothing. Periodically I have looked under the hood to see if anything and nothing. The one important caveat to all of this is that both nuts are still heavy. They feel full. Today I dug them up and gave them a good wash down with the hose. Here are the pictures: …

My dear friends.. I have decided to plant this Corypha on a spot outside my garden.. on public property actually.. Now.... My concern is that it will become to big to fast.. the spot where i want to put it around 10m x 15m I have checked out some pictures on the net but i don't feel that it gives me certainty.. How fast can i expect it to grow here in the tropics..? It was sown in 2011 and seems to be a pretty fast grower.. How much room does it need to develop...? Any comments on the subject are appreciated.. regards Jonas

Med Fan Palm Repotting Work_2016
by Kris- 3 replies

Dear Friends, Today i noticed that my Chamaerops Humilis fan palm which was growing in a small pot,the roots were lifting this palm upward. As on previous occasions when i planted this Med fan palm in the ground, they did rot during our wet tropical winters. This time around i thought of growing this baby in a raised container,in this case i used bigger cement pots which were lying idle with weeds growing in them. This palm was raised from seeds sent to me by M@x. The visuals of that repotting work will be posted in the following posts. And those who want to know more about this palm kindly visit the link given below : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamaer…

Well it may not be, I don't know. Is it common for a D. decaryi to emerge 2 leaves bifid then 3 split pinnate, then a big bifid again. It is a Triangle that I grew from seed.

This Phoenix hybrid is growing at Disney's Animal Kingdom. There are some other single trunked specimens growing nearby but this one is really slender with a full crown of leaves. It resembles a giant Syagrus weddelliana (Lytocaryum).

Multiple ID request

My wife and I went looking for some new plants today and found several interesting palms. We would love some IDs for these. Palm #1 This is a MASSIVE fan palm. 6'2 me for scale. The leaves that had fallen on the ground had small black thorns the size of small shark teeth. Palm #2 The people here call this a Hawaiian Palm, but Google has proven this local name to be useless. I suspect it's a foxtail palm. This lady dug up some spouts for us and we planted them in a pot with a royal palm sprout. Palm #3 The vendor called this a Madagascar Palm, but once again this local name offered no help with Google. She gave us a bunch of …

Botanical Garden picked seeds
by WaianaeCrider- 3 replies

Many years ago I visited a local botanical garden and I "may" have removed some palm seeds. The results are pictured here and are in a straight line on a terrace. The other palms you see are on a lower level and not in question. Today I wonder about the Veitchia joannis. One book I have says it's the tallest of the group. Not here. Could be a hybrid of course. This is the first year it's flowered. The V. arecina have flowered for years and years. The other day I noticed that there are long "thread" like "strings" hanging from the base of the fronds. Tried to point to two in the photo below. Each is easly a yard or more in length. So what do …
