Hi Everyone, As we are approaching winter here in CA, especially NorCal, I am wondering how you know if your king palms are thirsty? I know they are always thirsty plants/ semi-aquatic and they can be submerged in water. I have a drip system that runs more frequently everyday for all king palms I have but I also have the same drip on other palms that not necessarily as thirsty, like Lepto (Teddy Bear). I am trying to cut the frequency of watering since it is getting cold here. Average 65-70 during the day and high 40 at night. Lawn is not drying as fast as a month ago. My question here is how to know if king palms are getting thirsty, before any damage occurs…

RE roundup around palms
by sonoranfans- 3 replies

Having read Palmarati Keiths roundup articles: http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=29357 I started thinking about them. They make a lot of sense with strong empirical scientific underpinnings unlike so much of todays hot science topics. THere can be no doubt that strong chelate binding can make micronutrients unavailable to plants. But how will this effect palms and how long with the effects last. And can they be overcome by just over fertilizing with more micro nutrients? I inadvertently started an experiment this past february with two beccariophoenix alfredii. I had one established alfredii that had a mulch layer where little bermuda grass had pe…

Great Palm Planting Weather in Paradise
by PalmatierMeg- 3 replies

This weekend brought probably the last warm dry days before the onslaught of sweltering heat and humidity. I enlisted my forbearing husband's help in planting young palms in our yard. He took shovel & pickax in hand to dig holes in our infamous shell rock soil. Over the course of the afternoon, we planted nearly a dozen palms, including: 1) Coccothrinax camagueyana 2) Copernicia berteroana 3) Livistona benthamii 4 ) Cuban wild-collected Sabal sp 5) Ptychosperma macarthurii 6) Satakentia 7) Dypsis pusilla 8) Gaussia princeps …

CIDP emergin fronds brown at tips
by lpandroc- 3 replies

Hell all The first thing you are going to ask me is if I have pictures...unfortunately, I dont , tree is too high..but I can tell you that it seems my CIDP's emerging fronds from center are brown, maybe 12 inches from tip, other part is green...Not sure why. We have had alot of rain in FL this summer but the tree looks healthy, growing and green otherwise...seems recent....I use fertilizer spikes yearly A few years ago I had palm skelotonizer which I beat easily with chemicals but this does not look like it is that destructive...any thoughts? Thanks Lance

ID for some palms in a new nursery

During muy lunch break I went in a hurry to a relativ new nursery called "milpalmeras" (thousand palms). I was surprised to see so many palm species here in Nicaragua. Maybe they had 25. I searched for new species for my own collection. Some caught my attention, but there was almost no informacion about the species and as usual no cientific names. Could you help me to identify some, or point me in the right direction which species it could be? sorry for the bad quality photos. 1) They called it "lasteliana" so it might be D.lastelliana. The crownshaft is brown and fuzzy. It is really D.lastelliana, or might it be D.leptocheilos?

How big can this Bismarckia get in this container?
by Palmfarmer- 1 follower

Found this in Town, its pretty wide but not that deep as you see and i know the bismarckia has a tap root that can travel far down. I guess the depth of the container is 60-80cm and rounded towards the bottom. Can this become a big palm or is the container too shallow? how many years can it possibly live there before there it gets too rootbound and dies?

Dypsis hovomantsina problem
by PalmnutVN- 3 replies
Greetings all! I've got a small (about 18 months old) Dypsis hovomantsina that has lost its vigour and has slowly deteriorated over the past few months. Despite trying almost everything, nothing has worked and while a new spear has emerged over the past few weeks, I'm currently losing the older leaves quicker than they can be replaced. Then yesterday, I noticed that the top of the heel had gone white and feels a little soft to the touch, even though I have tried to keep it as dry as possible by keeping 1/3 of it above the soil level. So, my question is, is there any hope for a recovery and is it worth attempting to treat it with anything such as H2O2? Inc…

I just took an a/c break from trimming seed infructescenses from palms in our Caribbean Garden to report a curious finding. My rugged Sabal miamiensis x mexicana or x maritima hybrid, which normally would have 1,000s of developing seeds well on their way to a late Aug/early Sep harvest, is devoid of seeds. It put out inflorescences but these are turning brown and shriveling. It appears the whole 2023 crop of seeds will fail. The palm is otherwise healthy and growing. I can only speculate that the palm is putting its energy toward recovering from the effects of Ian. Even though it appeared to shrug off those brutal cat 4/5 winds, this palm and perhaps others like it still …

Botanical Treasures Palm Nursery
by Palmy- 3 replies

I remember this wonderful website that had palms for wholesale and also had really good prices for single palm sale. All of a sudden their website just went down ages ago. I was wondering if anybody knew of this place. I think they were in Homestead Florida, and I vaguely remember something about a hurricane or something. Anybody know exactly what happened to it? And who may have owned the nursery? Do they belong/post here at IPS? Thanks.

Loose palm

Hi All, I have an almost trunking, eight foot kentia that is suddenly leaning a bit, from the ground and it seems that it is "loose at the roots." I have tied it up and it is still green, hardy and pushing out fronds. I think that it may have been hit by one of the blind, stupid deer in my neighborhood. Any suggestions? Thanks, David
