Why do Areca palms frequently appear yellow in my area? If I wanted to plant one, how would I prevent this? Do they really only live 10 years?

Thanks to fellow PalmTalk member @Chris Chance for the seeds from his blackburniana. I finally started getting germination. These guys seemingly took forever to pop. Started out in sphagnum on a heat mat at 90F for several weeks to no avail, dropped it to 80, no movement, then 75 and finally after about a week and a half at 75 Im seeing germination.

Phoenix reclinata question
by plantapalm- 3 replies
I have a few questions about this tree. I am new as most of you know to my palm addiction and have been exploring parks around town for any uncommon palms that I have never notice before. Well right next to were I grew up I went to a park that I have been to a 100X or more and looked in awh at all the caryota mitis, areca's, phoenix's, sabels, and many others. I took some pictures of different species and came home to my brand new copy of "An Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms" to try an ID some on my own. And this is my question. In my first picture this I have id as a Phoenix reclinata and actually i think my shot is the same shot from the book, plate 641. So that was a…

fertilizing palms planted in concrete deck holes
by miamicuse- 3 replies
I understand when you fertilize palms, you are supposed to put the fertilizer around in a circle away from the trunk, near the drip line of the fronds. But in this case where the palms are planted in smaller holes, and the holes are close to the trunk, how would you do it? Put the fertilizer around the edge of that hole?

Germinating Nannorrhops
by John in Andalucia- 3 replies
- 1.1k views
I have 1000 Nannorrhops arabica in a box that see temperature highs of around 38°C (100°F). I've always considered this the limit with seeds, and only for hard seeds such as Brahea, Sabal, Syagrus etc. However, I'v only had three sprout in the 6-8 weeks I've had them, so as they are a desert-hardy palm, I put five in a small box of moist dirt and let them get really hot, like, 50°C (122°F). Low and behold, the next day, two out of the five have sprouted. Today I put the bigger box outside, where under the lid temperatures reach 47-48°C (117-118°F) during the hottest part of the day, and two more have sprouted. If you are germinating Nannorrhops, don't be put off by the gu…

transmitted vs reflected light from leaves
by sonoranfans- 3 replies
I was walking around the yard and observing palms with the sun and I saw a great example of the palm exhibiting transmitted and reflected light. WHen the light is transmitted with the leaf between the observer and the sun you can readily see the yellow K deficiency spots since the yellow carotenoids (in absence of chlorophyll) are in the pallisade mesophyll layer(inner layer). I bend the leaf so most of the sun doesnt pall through to the observer so reflected light dominates. THe leaf color of the reflected light is blue grey, the transmitted light is yellowish. One hypothese would be the wax is gone at those spots but themn they would not change cvolor as I bent the …

Dear all - this is just asuggestion but I would like to introduce the idea behind. In my BMW ///M forum we have such a thread, too, and it is running very successful. All new acquisitions are posted there and of course not only palms, simply everything. Here we are in a palm forum. Who ever buy or receive a new palm may post it here with photos. One of the benefits would be the centralization of this special activity. Nobody has to look for any new palm many, many sites through the forum. And we could discuss and comment all new plants. What do you think about it?

Nannorrhops
by PalmGuyWC- 3 replies
I have two Nannorrhops that have been over grown by other palms and they don't get enough sun light. One is about 3.5' high and the base is about 1'. The other one is larger and has several rhizomes coming from the center and looks like it could be broken into about 3 plants. Has anyone ever moved one or divided one? Mine have been in the ground for many years, and the shaded ones just seem the exhist, and not get any larger. I'd hate to loose them as they are kind of rare, but they don't really contribute much to my garden where they are growing now. Anyone out there with any ideas or suggestions? Dick

Today I swung over to Dolin’s Garden Center in St. Pete. Picked up two bags of Fox farm soil and a 50 lb bag of fertilizer. What’s everyone’s thought on this palm fertilizer? It’s got great minors. What’s caught my eye was the calcium. I’ve noticed the palm fertilizer at the big box stores. None have calcium in it. Maybe that’s the premium part on the label. $63.00 for a 50lb bag.

Disney's Hollywood Studios palms ID question
by Jason in Orlando- 3 replies
Does anyone know what Arenga species is planted around the big sorcerer's hat at Hollywood Studios? I initially thought they were A. engleri when I first saw them, but that was in the middle of the night. I got some seeds and the fruits were black. The overall size of the palms was only about 6-7 feet (~2m). I was under the impression that A. engleri was taller when fruiting and that the fruits were generally red. Any ideas? Jason
