Dypsis rivularis planted
by happypalms- 4 replies
Another medium sized dypsis that is still a dypsis the rivularis. A beautiful palm worth growing in any collection. Quite tough yet so beautiful, easy to grow and germinate. They get a nice bit of colour with a bit of age in the trunk. Cool tolerant down to 2 degrees Celsius and possibly lower, frost would not be its friend, they love water, and about all they really need is good drainage. And still a little it rare available but a rare.

Should I dig it up?
by Sandy Loam- 4 replies
A week ago, I planted a new Butia x Parajubaea x Syagrus hybrid which had arrived by mail bare-rooted with peat moss around the roots. I did not remove the peat most when I planted it and now I am wondering if that was a mistake. Should I dig it up to remove the peat moss? I don't want to disturb the roots more than I already have because there was a bit of an accident during the planting. Will the peat moss rot the roots? If so, I will dig it up all over again and remove it. I know that peat moss holds moisture, but it has been raining here almost every day anyway. I look forward to your advice, PalmTalkers. Thank you.

A Couple Of Questions
by Scott- 3 replies
Okay, these are pretty dumb questions I admit. But here we go. I a palm is planted perhaps too close to an overhang, a King in this case, will it grow out and away from the overhang? And, I have a volunteer Washy, which is right next to a retaining wall. It's about three feet tall now from the ground to the top of the fronds. It's also densly situated among other plants. I want to move it, so any ideas on how big to dig around it? And how will I know if it's deep enough - I don't want to cut it's roots. Thanks!

Trunk Stripes on Washingtonia?
by sipalms- 3 replies
No doubt this would have already been answered on here somewhere, but can anyone explain what causes these light/dark stripes on Washingtonias? It's particularly noticeable on skyscraping robustas but also clearly seen on filifera as well. Given that each leaf base takes up a very small line it has to be something else - is it inflorescences? Or is it a season's worth of growth? Or is it the points at which the palm had a full hurricane cut?? You can see physical lumps on this trunk

Palm tree hazards
by Banana Belt- 3 replies
- 1.5k views
Many books talk about and list the hazards of various Palms "Betrock's Landscape Palms by Alan W. Meerow". Hazards such as spines, thorns and other plant hazards. Recently I experienced an incidence while standing under one of my Jubaea Palms when I heard something above me in the Palm, I looked up and saw a large leaf falling away from the trunk. I stepped to the side when THUD, the leave hit the ground where I had been standing. The leaf weighed about 35 pounds and fell 10 feet before hitting the ground. Perhaps if the leaf had hit me I might not have been hurt to much, but as the tree grows taller, about 1.5 feet per year, it will soon be tall enough to drop…

The Elusive Dypsis White Triangle
by palmaddict- 3 replies

Dypsis decaryi hybrids are some of my favorite palms. I have 4 tribear hybrid Involving decaryi crossed with leptocheilos. I only have one of the more elusive dypsis white triangle. This cross was created by hybridizing the decaryi with pembana. I was only able to obtain this one from Florida as a 1 gallon. I wish I could have gotten 3 or 4 more. Tough and gorgeous here in San Diego.

Butia paraguayensis and Butia archeri
by freakypalmguy- 1 follower

I was at Kevin Weavers yesterday and found this mixed in with some other Butias. It looked different than the others so I dug in the pot and found the tag labeling it as B. paraguayenis. Looks to be the real thing, fine leaflets with no armament on the stems. The two on the right are B. archeri's I got at the JD Anderson sale. I was stoked to find these uncommon Butias.

I recently purchased one from JMarcus as a 4"pot size but looks big enough to be a gallon. Not much info on this thinking of bumping up to a 5 gallon untill I know how well it does in our SoCal winters. Will be keeping in a shaded north side patio. Any thoughts on these? Thanx. Ritchy

Palms around Santa Barbara, California
by sbpalms- 3 replies

Santa Barbara has a very mild zone 10a climate. Here are some photos of palms that can be seen around my area. Roystonea regia (not my photo) What I believe to be Roystonea oleracea. These are located near the beach at UCSB. This is a species of Pritchardia. I originally posted this photo in this topic: http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/51887-palms-at-ucsb/#comment-788706.

Seed ID and Viability Question
by gavilan1- 3 replies
I hope that this message is not inappropriate here. I collected these seeds previously while visiting the San Diego Zoo. However, the labels were lost and now I don't know what they were samples of. The first two on the left in the top row are round and hard like macadamia nuts. The rightmost seed in the second row looks more like a kidney bean, so I'm not sure if it is a palm seed. The other three in this row may be R. regia, but I don't know for sure - if they are, then the parent tree was a beauty and I couldn't resist saving a few seeds. The seeds in both rows three and four are from the same palms, that is, row three are four of a kind (two with dried fruit st…

Scale on Sabal Palmetto?
by BobStrauss- 1 follower

Thought my sabal palmetto was doing okay until I finally looked more closely at it today. Is that a major scale infestation going on? If so, any recommendations on what I should do to address it? It’s got almost 7 feet of trunk, located in San Antonio, TX. I generally water it well about twice weekly during the heat of the summer, though it has gotten ignored quite often late fall through spring. Wonder if I need some adjustment there as well..

Orlando lakeside gardening
by redbeard917- 3 replies

I am renting a room at this house in Orlando, FL and have been given wide leeway to make changes in the yard. The previous owners had introduced a very tropical look but weren't fully up to date on the maintenance. So there are dozens of camphor and Brazilian pepper seedlings of various ages in the beds for example. But they had a cool tropical aesthetic, with live oaks massively underplanted with things like bromeliads, peace lilies, tongue ferns, vines, etc. So I don't want to change the theme, but I'm adding a bit more color in a certain area in the form of Firebush (Hamelia), Firespike (Odontonema), Brazilian red cloak (Megaskepasma), Panama rose (Rondeletia), etc, an…

On site palm tree protection best practices
by Hdavidos3- 3 replies
Hello - I am working on a project with numerous palms on site and want to preserve them through construction. Does anyone have rule of thumb for how large the protection area should be? Do they follow conventional tree protection measures or do they have a smaller footprint due to their root structure? Any information would help! Thanks
