Probably not new for most of the older palmophiles, but this was a very interesting read for me! Which species of this rare and unpronounciable palms will have a chance in cultivation. Which south Caledonian high altitude palms are adaptable to´´normal´´soils and not that schistose soil from overthere....??? http://horizon.docum...20-21/27817.pdf

Coconut damage

December 2010 was extremely cold for our area in South Florida. Our December normal at the airport is 68F. and the average at a Palm Beach weather station was 60.6F.This was higher than the airport, which recorded an average of 58F.Also, Jan. of 2010 was one for the record books.Jan.2,2010-Jan.12,2010 was one of the most prolonged cold time-frames in our history. Although we have not recorded any freezing temperatures, it has been the prolonged nature of the cold that has been different. These are Coconuts stessing out:

Yucatán palms--what should I look for
by Yunder Wækraus- 3 replies
- 1.4k views
Will make my first trip to the Yucatán this summer. I've wanted to go for more than 20 years, but something has always come up. I'm going more because of my longstanding interest in ancient and modern Maya languages, but I also hope to see some wildlife while there. I'll be based in Cancun and on a tight budget. Are there any easily accessible areas nearby with native palms and wildlife? Is there anything palmy I do not want to miss?

Hello Everyone, I recently came across a palm tree (picture attached) in Cascais, Portugal, and I’m curious if it could possibly be a coconut tree (Cocos nucifera). Initially, I thought it wasn’t possible for coconut trees to grow in Portugal due to the climate being cooler than the tropical conditions these trees usually thrive in. However, it has sparked my curiosity.. Could anyone with expertise or knowledge in this area please confirm if this is indeed a coconut tree? I’m also interested in any information on how such a tree might survive in a Portuguese climate..

Sabal maritima
by Really full garden- 3 replies

I have three of these that I have grown from seed. They are pot bound and desperately need to get planted. I just cant seem to get too excited about planting them out. Are they visually distinct from other trunking sabals? Sabal guatemalensis (mexicana) grows naturally at the beach. From the few images of S.maritima I have seen it seems to have a lighter colored trunk than S.mexicana. Any other positve qualities?

Palms in group ? If yes, how ?
by Mangaratiba- 3 replies
My seedlings are going to be big enough to be transplanted soon in pots, I wonder if it is worth planting them in groups (species by species, no different species together), in the same pot, to get the maximum visual effect. Note that I live in France, so they will live forever in pots. Here are the candidates : Cyrtostachys renda : 5 seedlings Dypsis baronii black stem : 4 Euterpe edulis orange crownshaft : 3 Chamaedorea plumosa : 2 Question 1 What would be the best number ? What about suckering species cyrt. renda and dypsis baronii BS ? I’m OK to remove suckers… Or not ! Question 2 What would be the bes…

Palm tree roots lifting brick planter around pool
by Chad(Louisiana)- 3 replies
I have 3 planters incorporated next to my swimming pool- They measure about 6 ft wide, 4ft long and 2 ft high- We planted Sylvester Palms and they are absolutely beautiful- Last year we noticed 1 of the planters raising up on on edge and realized the roots had gotten between the brick and the concrete- I dug down only to find roots everywhere so I cut them back and backfilled the dirt- This year it appears the whole planter box is starting to raise and if not taken care of will be destroyed by the roots. I have a couple of questions 1. Should I just pull them up and plant something else?( if I do that I will have to get a small crane for 1 due to its size and placeme…

How hot is too hot?
by www.dadluvsu.com- 3 replies

Just curious, generally speaking, how hot is too hot? Most of the stuff I'm growing is pretty tropical in nature (I think!)... I just peaked at the thermomter in the shadehouse and it reads 107ºF and 40% humidity... everything is wet in there... Anyone ever cooked a palm due to overly high temps? If things are kept wet enough can't these plants take high temps into the 110's??

Hello everyone! So this is my very first post since joining palmtalk! My name is Von, im 25, and i live in Nacogdoches Texas. I absolutely LOVE palm trees, although I must admit I don't have many "exotic" species, most of my collection is comprised of the "regulars"... Sabal minor, sago, Mexican fan, euro fan, canary island, etc. Since we sit right on the cusp of zones I'm pretty limited because one year temps may stay warm through winter and then the next year we will fall into a deep freeze that kills everything, and I am NOT a potted-plant-person. I religiously try to get plants out of pots and into the ground as soon as possible. However, the point of my …
