Letting go 😢

Have you ever had trouble saying goodbye to a palm? Today we finally said goodbye to one of our three "Old Men" palms, which had struggled mightily since we got it in March 2022. Kindly procured by @aztropic, it was our craziest palm purchase. My husband drove from San Diego to Arizona to pickup three of them. Ok, technically it was for our daughter to "spend time with her cousins" - but the palm opportunity was the underlying driver. We had always wanted a trio of Old Men and had purchased three small ones locally (the tiny ones visible in the photo below)... but the opportunity to snag three huge ones seemed too good to pass up, since this palm is quite rare for CA…

Last spring I planted out 3 of my poorest growing Parajubaea torallyi var.tor that were growing in to small pots. They grew so spectacularly in the ground, and quickly looked better than my bigger tortors in big pots. Last fall when I realized how they were happy in the ground I decided to plant all the tortors in the ground. A little red light began to burn in my mind saying: Maybe it´s to late.......No it isn´t ,last winters were mild,I answered..... Maybe there will be a hard frost........... they are hardy palms...they are growing in England! I answered ...... So,I planted out all my 6 remaining beloved seedlings grown from seeds. At the end of June there was a free…

? ID of this Areca?

Two three years ago we were used to buy seedlings at the Peradeniya Botanic Garden shop (before we knew Palmtalk). and we got this: It would be funny if it is Areca concinna which is very spontaneous in the Morning garden. I hope it can be Areca triandra. (for those who know hoy to see the difference!) What do you think?

?? Pseudophoenix cold tolerance in Central FL, USA
by Keith N Tampa (ex SoJax)- 9 replies

I'm interested in comparing freeze damage to Pseudophoenix species vs Roystonea species in Central FL. Thats not to say if you have experience from some other location that it doesn't matter, but I'm going to be growing them in Central FL so thats why I'm most interested in experiences from there. How about vs Foxtail? I couldnt find anything in the freeze damage forum.

Does anybody remember the guy from Houston he was selling his place to finance a move to costa rica or somewhere?? I want to say he was going to try and manage a "garden" for the Houston palm society or something?? He had some big palms in the ground and I think I have a buyer for a couple of his big braheas. I just cannot for the life of me remember what his name was. Thanks Tad

I have a protected spot next to my house that was a consistant 5 degrees warmer than the temps recorded at a weather station about 1/4mi from my house. This spot only saw 3 instances of light frost this past winter. Do I have a chance of growing this palm here? This winters lows recorded at the weather station near my house are listed below. Thanks in advance for any advice.

?Creating Wodveitchia

I have a Foxtail growing about 15' from a Christmas palm. Both have just thrown out an inflorescence. I really don't need any seeds of the individual plants, but would certainly love to have a couple of hybrid seeds. Not knowing very much at all about pollination techniques, is it possible (and easy) to cross pollinate them by hand? Anyone have any experience with this?

?Fungus on seeds
by Gbarce- 13 replies

Last august 9 put Licuala Mapu seeds in a germination box with cocopeat. Today I took a peak and most of them had some sort of white stuff on them that I assume is fungus growth. I hear that Licuala seeds are particularly suceptible to fungal attacks so I dusted them all in Dithine which is a broad spectrum Fungicide and replanted them in sterilized (boiled) cocpopeat. What do you guys do when your seeds get fungus? what have you tried that's worked and what didn't? Who has had experience with mapu seeds in particular? Thanks.

?Market Value?

Not trying to buy or sell, but what are these 2 little gems worth to someone these days? I know that lots of Tahina seeds went out to alot of us, but with the political situation in Madagascar and no certainty as to whether seeds will ever come from there in the future, they should be becoming quite valuable. Furthermore, they seem to be very hardy (mine survived 32 degrees for 4 hrs with no visible damage) and they are one of the most attractive fan palms out there, in my opinion. My favorite palm (at the moment) is the mealy bug dypsis. I did buy a bunch of D. malcomberi and D. mananjarensis seeds and seedlings in the past 2 to 3 years, but not one of them looks anythin…

?Natural Death
by oliver- 4 replies

Having grown palms for many less years than lots of people on this board, I laready have a few that are at their "maximum" size. I have a few D. lutescens at my house approaching 40 ft of trunk, some Texas sabals at my office (which were established when I bought the property) at 75 ft and some Royals at about the same amount of clear trunk. What determines when a palm will die - ? natural causes such as fires, infection, or hurricane. Do they just stop growing or do they keep getting bigger until something kills them (like a fish) - maybe this should be in the newbie forum, but I have never seen one just die because it got beyond the "maximum size" criteria in the book.

?Pinnate vs. palmate
by PalmatierMeg- 15 replies

Okay, it's Friday and my work day/week is dragging to an end. But I still have some intellect left and I've been wondering.... Has anyone ever done/read any study on why fan palms are so much more cold-hardy than feather palms? I believe the Butias are the most cold tolerant pinnate palms but can't hold a candle, so to speak, to Trachycarpus and its palmate kin. Why is that? Why do pinnate palms tend toward more tropical climes? What makes fan palms so much hardier? Is it total surface area exposed to cold? Stronger genes? If so, how? Why do the pinnates extend only so far, then hit the wall? Inquiring minds want to know.

?What to put in a big pot
by oliver- 11 replies
- 1.4k views
This is my first post - been lurking for a while though. Great Forum! I live in Brownsville, Texas which is basically zone 10a. I have alot of marginal palms in the ground. I think my biggest problem is the clay soil and salty ground water. Some do well and some don't. I just bought a 40" plastic pot. (terra cotta imitation) I was thinking about putting in a trio of Chambeyronia, but would like some input on how they do in large pots. I have a couple of Christmas palms in a slightly smaller pot, and they are significantly stunted compared to ones of the same age that I put in the ground. The 40" pot is too big to fit in my greenhouse, so I can't put anything in there that…

¿Pseudophoenix sargentii or vinifera?
by migacebo- 12 replies
- 3.3k views
Hello, last Friday I found this specimen in a nursery nearby. I think it may be a Pseudophoenix sargentii, but I'm not sure. The Pseudophoenix sargentii and vinifera look very similar at this stage of growth. Provide some photos if someone wants to comment on his identification. Incidentally, the best price: 20 euros. I would appreciate any information on crop growth ranges, fertilizer needs, etc.. I know you must have a substrate very draining and irrigation should be more scarce, especially in winter. He likes the sun and resists salinity and wind as a few. Its growth is slow. Well, I am listening to. A greeting
