Phil and Hugh are finally going to regale us on their experiences of the big Madagascar trip they were a part of. Remember they took off to the Seychelles as well. I refer to the big trip that included Doctor John Dransfield and Jeff Marcus etc. Love to see you there next Tuesday night at Mt Cootha BGs, and I hear Colin Wilson may be in town, so you better bring some extra Monte Carlos Mike and Andy.

PBPCS General Meeting: Wednesday May 5, 2021 @ 7 pm Speaker: Dr. Larry Noblick "An Ice Age Relic Palm in Arizona" In the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge of Arizona, there is a relic population of Washingtonia growing in a remote narrow desert canyon surrounded by Sonoran Desert vegetation. Some scientists have dared to recognize it as a new species and others have dismissed the idea. In a recent study it was found to be an outlier from all others in the genus based on morphology. Is it a new species? Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85841720590?pwd=Um11UVZPTk12RUZOWHBZWHVueVNEZz09 Call in: 1-669-900-6833 Meeting ID: 85841720590

A big WHOOP OF APPLAUSE for Palm Talker and new PSSC San Diego Chair @Josh-O for setting this up! And, our hosts, including @ellidro and @Matt in SDfor agreeing to share their gardening glory. The PSSC's September 16, 2023 meeting will be held at two gardens we've never been to before. This is going to be yin-yang and yang-yin; small and big, and too much and not enough. Hi Everyone, the BPACS April outing is to Alma Park Zoo, followed by a visit to Rob’s Rare Palms. The outing will kick off at 10:00 am (22/4/12) at Alma Park Zoo, 18 Alma Rd, Dakabin. Meet in the car park. We have organised a group discount, so the admission will be $30. We were hoping for a larger discount, but that was the best they would give us... For those that don’t know, Alma Park Zoo was created by Bill Williams in 1969. Bill was also the owner of several palm nurseries and a keen collector. He transplanted many mature palms to help form the rainforest canopy of the zoo. Some palms within the zoo originate from Brisbane and are over 100 years old. T…

All, I had a chance to work briefly at the palmetum at Lake Merritt today. I was there for a couple of hours and made some progress with some 'attack' heliconias. My opinion,....we have some deferred maintenance there and need to catch up,.....or we won't. The image of jungle run rampant comes to mind. See you all there next month.

by Walter John- 1 reply

This Sunday, 24th October takes the society on a "palm extreme" garden outing to the private home gardens of two of the original Aussie ratpackers, Rob Meulet and Michael Green (fm:NEWCAL). These bad boys of the Gold Coast hinterland are sure to have some wonderful palms on display after the glorious palm loving weather of late. With a bit of luck, I'll get along myself and take my trusty camera with me, so look out for some interesting topics coming your way next week. If you're interested in coming along, be warned, the day is sure to be mind blowing. PM for details.
