Fox Tail Palm brown spots
by The Palm Kit- 2 replies

Hey everyone! So, I bought my Fox Tail Palm in Orlando, Florida back in May, and I absolutely love it. I don’t remember if it had brown spots or a bit of yellowing when I got it, but it does seem to have a few spots. It’s in a pot, and we’ve been watering pretty much daily because it’s been really hot and dry here in Southwest Virginia. Do y’all have any suggestions as to whether it’s too much watering, or what it might be? The soil seems to drain well. Thanks!

Hi There I have an issue with my indoor Palm. I've had it for about 6 years and it's always been super happy in the same position. My issue is that new fronds have appeared but are not opening after a number of months. The only variable here is that I've repotted it in a bigger pot. I've attached some pictures. Hoping I might be able to get some suggestions from this fine group. Thanks Symon

Hi all, I've bought a Ptychosperma Elegans online but it arrived with some black dots on the fronds and they seem a little yellow-ish. It's my first P. Elegans and besides it I'm really happy with it, so I hope it's nothing to worry about. Do you guys have any tips or tricks? Thanks in advance! Steven

Describing palm sizes by container size
by D. Morrowii- 2 replies
I’m having trouble understanding palm sizes as they are commonly referred to by container size. I’ve purchased palms in 4” containers that were larger than ones in 1 gallon even from the same supplier. Is there some general criteria to determine what size you palm is? Or is there a good reference or book that explains maturity stages of a palm? Is it just root space or growth? Reading through the forum I’ve seen it brought up that a 15 gallon palm is a good safe size to plant out a marginal palm or that a certain palm was planted out at 3 or 5 gallons. What are some practical ways to think about this?

Repotting Outdoor Dypsis Lutescens
by ewaforevah- 2 replies

I'm a newb, looking to this wonderful forum for advice. I picked up a bunch of 3gal and 7gal dypsis lutescens for outdoor privacy. Since it's in a concrete area, they will remain in a pot of some sort. Right now they're 4-5ft and I'll need them to reach the 6-8ft range. Do I need to repot them? I'm perfectly content leaving them in the black nursery pots if repotting isn't necessary. What are the potential issues if I do keep them in the original pots? If I do repot them, any tips, advice or good resources on how to do it? How tricky is it to do and not kill the palm? Thanks!

Finally Phoenix Roebelenii

Finally after 5 months of watering this pot every other day, I finally have 2 sprouts out of 52 and the others must not be far behind! I'm excited to finally see them after so long I'm gonna update their growth and progress here overtime. I do have a question though, when should I start to bring these seedlings in since it's fall now and it's gonna get chilly eventually, Should they be fine as long as it doesn't reach 30F right? or maybe mid 40s since their so tiny?

Adding marine sand to a potting mix
by SoulofthePlace- 1 follower

What do you think marine sand will do to palm seedlings or small plants if marine sand is added to the potting mix while transplanting little palms? We don't have normal yellow construction sand available on the island and therefore everyone uses the grey marine sand (occasionally with some small shells) for construction purposes and after a few years salt crystals are coming out of the walls damaging painted surface etc. Now if I add say 30% of marine sand into the potting mix for better drainage along with perlite, do you think it can potentially damage the potted plants? The marine sand is piled up in the county enterprise and is for sale and it's there for an unknown …

Lady Palm transplanted....
by Cancundude- 2 replies

......I may have screwed up. She was in the same pot for 6 years. The original pot was narrow and very tall. For the life of me I could not find a similar larger pot so had to go with what I could find. The problem was to fit in the new pot I had to remove about 10% of the bottom of the root ball. Have I done a major bad? All the new suckers have come up in the last 6 months so for the most part always has been a very healthy plant. If I have done damage any suggestions on how I might mitigate that damage? Also would I be correct in assuming the older growth will be what is impacted? I wouldn’t mind the lower growth to catch up to thicken up the overall look and match the…

Miami Thriving Balcony Palms

Green & Golden Mayan Dwarf Palms. Have discovered a new passion for palms. I take care of them so much almost OCD. Worm castings, black kow composted manure, homemade cold pressed neem sprays, ant traps - I discovered getting rid of the ants gets rid of coconut scale protection. Have also introduced ladybugs each coconut palm has a colony of around a dozen black lady beetles!

Ponytail Palm in Trouble...
by shahram0- 2 replies

We've had a ponytail palm for over a year. The fronds regularly turn brown, starting at the tip, and then entirely. This has been going on since we got the plant as a gift. The soil is Miracle-Gro. We only water when the soil is dry (we use a houseplant water meter to test). The soil is dry every 10 days or so (I know that is less than the recommended watering schedule). I've tried watering less, but that only seems to increase the browning. I'm wondering if I'm watering too little (despite the ponytail general recommendation)? Sure would appreciate some advice... Thanks,

The landscapers in our "maintainance free" townhome, sprayed for weeds in the flowerbeds and it got on my European Fan Palm because of the breezer. Several fronds, including the stems, have turned brown. I recognize the damage from other plants that were inadvertently sprayed. Should I trim the brown/dead stems at the trunk? Will the plant be OK? I would say that no more than a quarter of the 4 foot high plant was affected. Any hopes that the plant will survive. I have discussed this problem of spraying weeds inches away from thriving plants. .

Verschaffeltia splendida: 12 months from sprouted seed to 9” deep pot.

Really pleased with the progress on this 1 year old seedling. It was growing in a red solo cup placed within the grey cache pot for past 3 months and produced many long roots out the drainage holes. Today I cut drainage holes in the cache pot (grey tumbler cup) and then transplanted. The tumblers allow a deep narrow pot for seedings and can be cut away easily. Photos below.

Transplanting root bound Christmas tree palm
by Ricanstructed- 2 replies

Over a year ago I purchased two pots (one pictured) for the single trunk adonidias I finally found yesterday. As a native Puerto Rican, then Florida transplant, these trees are a much much needed taste of home here in my new location in mid Missouri. The home we purchased won me over with the 2 story large "great room" that offers sky lights with plenty of filtered sun for all of my tropicals over winter. These pots flank the fireplace so perfectly and they've just been sitting there empty waiting on these Adonidias to arrive. I am heartbroken to realize they are about an inch or so too wide for the top of the pots. As you can see, they do widen out significantly past t…

Coco pots

Has anyone used coco pots (pots from compressed coconut coir) for seedlings? What's your feedback? I read that when the plant needs a bigger pot you can just bury the old pot in the new, bigger one without removing it, which saves the plant the transplant shock.
