How do I make these guys happy?? Pindo & Canary

Hi, I am hoping someone here can give me some insight as to what I have done to make my little green friends so unhappy and how to fix it. I live in Ohio and have been wintering them in the garage. I am using a HPS grow light and a space heater. I water them every couple of weeks. I check them with a hydrometer before hand. Generally, the temp in the garage is between 50-60. It has gone lower when it is brutally cold and the heater can't keep up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Because they just fall over all the time! Easy to make from corrugated plastic vegetable boxes that your grocery store may have in the back. They're not strong enough on their own, but if you take a box knife and double the interior they work fine. Cutting hand holes to line up on the interior pieces and then taping them together improves it's strength. Cutting away the sides allows sun to reach seedlings.

Howdyall: I noted with interest the thread about fungus gnats which seems to be the worst problem many have in their indoor plantscapes. Here in Los Angeles, I've tried to use potted palms from my garden in my law office, at the head lawyer's behest. He liked plants, so . . . The problem was that the palms, grown outdoors in my Death Camp, often came infested with insects, particularly scale, Since the building is a sealed environment, no ladybugs, etc. which prey on the scale, can get in, and the scale went wild. It was necessary to take the palms OUTSIDE and souse them with acephate solution (no longer available) and wait a bit, then bring them back …

Short answer is NO I had an alocasia potted in a farmers pot sitting in a decorative pot. It suffered a severe spider mite infestation so I elected to simply remove the alocasia from the pot and place it out doors. I then moved my kentia palm (also in a farmers pot) into the same decorative pot. Just sitting there. And guess what. Kentia palm now has spider mites. make sure you absolutely sanitize any pot your use if it suffered from an infestation

Dypsis lutescens weird colored leaf?

Hi! My Dypsis lutescens is doing great, she's sprouting new leaves everyday and is growing like crazy. I repotted it in August to a bigger pot with slow release fertilizer (soil mix including lechuza pon) and she was doing great, but today I spotted this in one of the leaves. It's only one. I can't see any other issues apart from a little sunburn in a couple of them. What do you think this could be?

How to keep Christmas palms in containers small
by NOLAnuts- 0 replies
Hi, I am planting a small raised bed garden in New Orleans specifically to be a haven for green anole lizards. The star of the 4' x 12' garden will be 2 Christmas palms. I don't know if this is possible, but I'd love the palms to stay small - I love the size of the ones in the photo. Will growing the two of them in a single pot help me achieve this? I'm not a gardener and I'm from up north so this is my first palm tree experience. Just want to have a pretty tree and make the lizards happy. Thank you in advance for any tips.

Royal Palms from @NOT A TA
by Mostapha- 0 replies

After seeing and reading what @NOT A TA, about his experimenting with germinating Royal Palm, posted some nice pics of the seedlings and a cross section of a pot showing the roots. Some were sun germinated and some shade grown, being as I live in N.Y.S. the idea of shade grown caught my eye. I wrote to him and asked if he would consider selling me a few shade grown. Well long story short, he agreed and also told me that he had some that he thought were much nicer than the ones in the pics, that he had utilized a different shade technique for germination. So, for just a few dollars and shipping, I received 16 very nice seedlings today via usps. I wanted to post pics befor…

Lipstick palm transplant

Hey guys I am wanting to repot my palm into the same pot. I believe the soil is to compact and she is not getting the oxygen as the leaves are very pale green. I have had it now for about 14 months and in that time she has put out 4 new fronds. Northeast window floor to ceiling so some great morning light. But ya my gut says my first mix was to dense and not enough drainage. Sooo question is can I knock off or gently wash the old dirt around the outside of the root ball to get some new mix among the roots? Suggestions pleeease. Oh and can’t seem to keep more than 4 healthy fronds at a time. New one spreads out and the 5th one dies off. Thanks is advance!

essential oils and palms

I have this ultrasonic (?) atomizer which originally is meant to spread essential oils into the air to give the room a good scent. I am always interested in enhancing the air humidity for my potted palms (chamaedoreas, Kerriodoxas, etc). Does anybody know if essential oils have a negative effect on palm trees? Or which essential oils I should avoid? Thanks so much, Matti

Dear All, I’m curious if folks have an immediate reaction to what may be going on with this recently potted licuala peltata (October 1, 2021). I’m suspicious about the soil type holding too much water even though I’ve been very cautious about overwatering. I just started a humidifier and have ramped up misting since it seemed to be yellowing. Any ideas about what might be going on? I’m posting the progression from potting to photos I took today ~6 weeks. sincerely, allan

Sickly Kentia Palm
by Kae101- 0 replies

Hi there, I've been recommended this forum to help with sickly palms. Above is my gorgeous Kentia palm ive had about a month. He normally sits in the corner where he is about 3ft from a west faving window and about 10 from a ginormous 5 door patio window. I tried to make sure he was getting indirect light. I check his soil once a week for moisture levels and only water with rain water if the top two inches are dry. I water him in his nursery pot by watering him until they water runs through the drainage holes and then leave him to drain out. I mist him twice a week, again with rain water and sometimes give him a gentle dusting. During todays misting ive noticed about 3 of…

Help! Dying Golden Palm (I think)
by Hendo- 0 replies
Hi Guys, Looking for some advice, I have what I think is a Golden Palm. Until recently she has been pretty healthy with the normal cycle of dying fronds. But recently rather than browning from the top backwards the have started dying from the stem, so that the leaves are still green but the stem has gone brown and limp. I also have a fungus knat issue but I don’t think that is the problem. Recently moved house which is smaller so she has gone from a prime spot to a less bright bedroom. any ideas??

Hello everyone, i am new to the hobby. I picked up two windmill palms last year. They grew decent. Just picked up two more this year. For some reason they seem to be getting brown and yellow toward the ends and they are not growing as well. I fertilized them at the beginning of this season And i try to water them once a week. I am just a little lost on how to care for them at this point. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Dypsis cabadae slow growth problem
by Davidl- 0 replies
I have some Dypsis cabadae in one gallon pots for approximately three years. They seem very slow growing having only produced one frond in a year. Some of the new fronds are stunted similar to boron deficiency. I have them in some miracle grow potting soil with a little sand added to keep the pot from falling over. I water them everyday when they don’t get rain and they are in partial sun and color is dark green. I fertilized three times this year but nothing has gotten better with them. Any suggestions?

Neglect during winter months indoors
by Rickybobby- 0 replies

Does this work? I have a friend I have him palms. He doesn’t care and forgets. However his palms grow better than mine. I try this. So I’ve been busy with a reef tank. Been neglecting the palms. Either too much water or not enough. Doesn’t work. Temp and light consistent. The solution is. Don’t grow 300 seedlings at once. It’s very hard to meet the needs of everyone at the same time. But the strong will survive!

Help! My majesty palm now has 3 brown leaves (out of 7 total) over the span of a week or so. The 4th frond is now becoming mostly brown, though has yellow. I move it to partial sunlight 5' from a window about 4 to 6 hours a day. I let it sit in the shower at night time for the humidity. It is in a bottom self-watering pot. https://i.stack.imgur.com/8Y3iF.jpg https://i.stack.imgur.com/keil7.jpg https://i.stack.imgur.com/L4Gi7.jpg https://i.stack.imgur.com/7PPrI.jpg
