Unlike some other Palm Talkers, I didn’t have the good fortune to be born and raised in a palmy environment; I am a product of the industrial parts of Ohio, Cleveland to be specific. I left Ohio in 1985 for California and have been here ever since. Haven’t regretted that decision for a New York Nanosecond, but sometimes you think about the place of your roots now and then. I just got back from a seven day Cleveland sabbatical, for a high school reunion, and also to hang out with my younger brother for a bit. Our nuclear family moved into the house brother now occupies back in 1970, and the oak tree pictured below was already there, about forty feet tall. …

Some scenes from yesterday's walkabout.. ** For any new comers curious about a full description of the various prominent peaks / mountains / other landmarks in the pictures, check out the first chapter of the " Socially Distanced threads from back in 2020 ** Will lay out some, but not all landmarks in this chapter.. Will be back out here in time for catching the Palo Verde in- season again, and ..hopefully.. sometime after the start of Monsoon season, IF this year is wet enough to warrant a check in. Had so many places to check out last summer that i skipped this area. Height of a reasonably wet summer is pretty much the only " season " i haven't yet seen …

Iam very fortunate to have the glossy red tail black cockatoo that inhabits my area where I live. A very rare endangered species of bird. When on my property working you hear the faintest little sounds thats a little clicking cracking sound that is ever so soft with a tiny little squell of a pair of birds feeding. They have become use to our voices and we don’t seem to worry them to much. Every time I see them I feel a great connection with nature thinking what a great joy Mother Nature can bring to a soul. The video footage of them drinking is a special moment. Our conservationists friends tell us it is rare footage that they are forwarding onto the land care group they …

I just watched this show called "The Journey of Man" which traced our ancestors' journey out of Africa. It used DNA markers to trace the route of folks from Africa all the way to South America. Very interesting show. I love genetics.

Swedish couple in Sirinhaém
by Gileno Machado- 4 replies

A neighbour called me a while ago and said that Sirinhaém had an important visit this afternoon: King Carl Gustav and Queen Silvia of Sweden stopped for a brief visit to the beach on their way to the neighboring municipalty of Ipojuca where they've visited a shipbuilding factory recently innaugurated. The Royal couple is staying at a nice beach resort in Muro Alto, 30 km to the south of our house and not very far from the hotel where Alberto stayed with his family last year. The newspaper reports that they both love drinking coconut water and appreciate very much the local plants, especially the palms (they must be relatives of Bo and Ciczi...haha). Queen Silvia (who is…

atonal music

In Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire there is no "key" as such; all twelve notes of the chomatic scale are used freely. Therefore, there is no sense of direction in the music. In most music, harmony is directional, such as G7 moving to C major7 etc to convey a feeling of a structure or story.

The Ziggurat is Back
by Scott- 4 replies

The Mayans and Egyptians constructed incredible feats of architecture able to weather the test of time, but they had no idea their pyramids would inspire the shape of the latest carbon-neutral super-structure to hit Dubai. Dubai-based environmental design firm Timelinks recently released some eye-catching renderings of the gigantic eco pyramid - aptly named Ziggurat - with plans for its official unveiling scheduled for the Cityscape Dubai event which runs October 6-9 of this year. The ginormous pyramid will cover 2.3 square kilometers and will be able to sustain a “community” of up to 1 million. Timelinks claims that their Ziggurat will be capable of running comple…

City Country Divide

Tank's piece about the pig chase got my feeble mind to thinking a bit, and reminded me of another controversy out here on the West Coast, about a dog named Nadas in Oregon. Oregon had a law that allowed county honchos to put a dog to death for, among other things, chasing livestock. Nadas was spotted doing so by a 13 year old girl, and taken into the pound. An enormous legal brouhaha ensued. Country folk stood behind the county, while city folk rallied behind the dog. Who do you think won? click here for link
