Hi all, Have been over in Indonesia for the last two weeks, and returned to Oz via Singapore. Thinking ahead, I managed to wangle my flights so I arrived in Singapore with about 7hrs to spare until my flight back home. Just enough time to grab a taxi and zoom on over to the Botanic gardens with my camera!! A bit of history on the gardens: The first "botanical and experimental garden" in Singapore was established in 1822 on Government Hill at Fort Canning by Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore and a keen naturalist. The garden's main task was to evaluate for cultivation, crops which were of potential economic importance, including those yieldi…

In April 2005,Dr. Peter Balasky of South Florida, Bill Beattie of Australia and myself teamed up for a month long trip to Madagascar. This trip took us from the Marojejy Mountains in the Northeast down to the Masoala Peninsula and over to Ile Sainte Marie off the coast. During our trip, we saw over 50 palm species in habitat. Populations of certain species were seen for the first time. I will be posting several of the photos taken during our trip. The first one here is an awe-inspiring view of the Marojejy Mtns.

The Gardens at its present site was founded in 1859 by an Agri-Horticultural Society. Planned as a leisure garden and ornamental park, the Society organised flower shows and horticultural fetes. In 1874, the Society handed over management and maintenance of the site to the government. The scientific mission of the Gardens evolved when the colonial government assumed management and deployed Kew-trained botanists and horticulturists to administer the Gardens. In 1988 Dr Tan Wee Kiat became Director of the Gardens. While the Gardens remained committed to its role in making Singapore a Garden City and meeting recreational needs, renewed focus on being a leading internationa…

I'm embarking on a cross country road trip with my dad tomorrow morning and am hoping to be dropped off at Balboa Park while my dad visits some friends in La Jolla. Anyways, I want to see ALL the palms and tropical trees in the park, so I'll probably have to walk/run fast. So anyways, if anyone is free on Wednesday (probably around noon, but it's hard to plan a road trip so precisely) and would like to meet up, let me know!! I am planning on going to the Kendall Frost Marsh Preserve to see if there are any Avicennia marina var. resinifera remaining after they eradicated them, and then I want to go to Catamaran Resort, but I want to spend most of my time at the SD Zoo and …

Last year, I once again made plans to fly back to Madagascar for another exciting look at some of the most beautiful and sought after palms in the world. When I arrived after a long 20+ hour flight into Antananarivo, the capital, Dr. Peter Balasky from here in South Florida and Bill Beattie of Australia were already there to join up for some exciting palm hunting. Prior to arriving, Pete was already in the country and down in the southern part near Ranomafana with his good friend, Pierrot. There, they were helping in the rebuilding of a schoolhouse and donating many supplies that he had brought over with him. The next day, Bill and I decided we would take a short taxi …

Two weeks ago there was a holiday here and i got two more days vacation. My family, my parents and all my sisters families, went to a warm water resort in Jurema , Central Paraná. The climate there is a lot warmer than here on the second tableland, because of the low altitude and it´s also located northern from here. The distance from Carambeí to Jurema is +- 300 km. I didn´t saw so many palms on the road,(mostly queens) but I photographed some of them. I saw Acrocomia totai,a Butiagrus,a Sabal species(?) and most interesting of all: Euterpe edulis growing in the warm region of Jurema but also a few trees in the araucaria forest ,in a region that officialy isn´t the …

Today I have some pics of traveling to Prachinburi Thailand, the last Habitat of Corypha lecomtei. Among group of Corypha, C.lecomtei is the most attractive in genus with very long light green black stripped and upright forming petiole. As same as others Corypha, C.lecomtei end their own life after extremely flowering. This way could make them endanger in few century, cause one thing C.lecomtei difference from others, it rarely to see and can be found only in the last habitat here in Prachineburi. Prachinburi is 4hrs east from Bangkok, here is the map we was going to. Let's tour!!!

The upcoming biennial has motivated me to post some pictures from a trip my wife, Mary, and I took to Borneo a couple of years ago. Part of our trip hit some of the same destinations planned for the biennial, but there’s so much to see – and so many palms – that it was an easy decision to return with the palm society this year. If anyone is still wondering about whether to sign up, perhaps these shots will help you get you off the fence. Let’s start with Bako National Park which figures to be a highlight of the biennial. Sandy beaches, lush rainforest, golden cliffs, and fantastic palms. Here’s Mary and me on one of those beautiful beaches in Bako with Oncosperma tig…

Rare palms of Thailand in habitats 1 2 3 4

I had a trip to the south of Thailand early this week to see some palms in habitats. Southern part of Thailand is home to the majorities of Thai native palms, about 80% of all native palms are there. Unfortunately, some of these areas are now very dangerous to enter due to terrorists. Our mission for this trip is to see about 15 species in 3 different locations with one area in the red zone (Betong) so we need to drive pass Malaysia to get to the area. The whole trip took 3 days and 2 nights in total. This map shows the area we went to see palms.

Had a great day at Utopia nursery in Valdora yesterday, thanks Clayton and Teresa. Your generosity and knowledge is unbounding. And if saying that doesn't get me more discounts, nothing will. Seriously though thanks for a beaut day, even though I was in poor in health (nuff said). The troup includes some of the finest palm collectors/growers and top people you are likely to meet.
