American Orchid Society
by RainForestt Robert- 15 replies

This past summer some of you may be aware that I vacationed in So Fla. for a week. I decided to visit the AOS headquarters, since they have decided that maintaining the headquarters in this current economic climate was clouding the organization's mission. My initial impression was "Those are some nice Chambeyronia". No evidence of orchids so far, but there are some killer palms  Dypsis decaryi Hmmmm, fruiting ....

American Orchid Society Garden to Close!
by palmislandRandy- 37 replies

The American Orchid Society Garden is closing to the public as of the end of May. They cite declining memberships and endowments hit b the financial crisis. Apparently they will still open to the public a few times a year for special occasions. I stop by when I pass by. It's 3.5 acres in west Delray Beach, Florida, next to the Morikami (Japaneese Garden). They have a few palms mixed with tropicals & a huge greenhouse with thousands of orchids and tropicals. What a shame They may open in the future. I took these last time I was there. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/community/news...0,5282325.story …

An amazing trip to Nepal 1 2
by bgl- 50 replies

Kim and I returned earlier this month after an incredible trip to Nepal. We spent the first couple of days in and around Kathmandu, staying in the fascinatingly messy Thamel neighborhood where lots of pedestrians, lots of motorcycles and cars (mostly small Suzukis) mingled as if there was no tomorrow! It should be pointed out that this is a two way street. Traffic is on the left side.

An Evening at "The Point"
by _Keith- 6 replies

My wife and I joined my in-laws at Cypremort Point last night, known to locals as "The Point." It is this little jaunt of land (mostly relcaimed from surrounding marshes) out into Vermillion Bay. It is built up of mostly sediments dredged from the bay/canals, limestone, and countless generations of Oyster shells. It is quite a tough environment plants wise, yet I witnessed mature Sabals, W. robusta, CIDP, and at least two Canaries. Most amazing is that this place took a good whipping in Hurricane Lili 6 years ago and Rita 3 years ago. These palms would have spent several days with rootballs under 2 to 6 feet of salt water at that time. Yet, they all look quite …

An hour of Golden Light on the Equator
by amazondk- 26 replies

Yesterday I drove round trip from Boa Vista, Roraima to Rorainoplis some 300 kms to the south to check on our business. On the return trip the skies were dramatic with the northern hemisphere equatorial winter storm clouds. I could see off to the west that the sun would break through the clouds and that the light would be ideal for pictures. It was about 4:30 PM or so when the sun started to appear. Since sunset always is around 6:00 at this latitude, about 2 degrees North, the light is golden at this hour. I was driving through an area where the mountains start to pop up out of the tropical plain. In areas the forest gives way to savanna and the views are great. A…

Anavilhanas Ecological Reserve

Here are a few shots from Google Earth of the our area looking up the Negro River. The Negro River is the second largest river in Amazonia and has blackish gold water which results from organic matter as the river spreads out over the northwestern corner of Amazonas state reachin up to Colombia. The islands resulted from material washed down from the Guyana shield. The area of the Anavilhanas is now a Federal Ecological Reserve of 350,000 hectares. In addition up the river a bit to the left side is the Jau National Park which is the largest park in Amazonia. The river is lined with white sand beaches. During the low water season, September to December, beaches appear…

Andaman and Nicobar Islands.... Interesting trip
by chris.oz- 15 replies

The main tourist areas in the Andamans are Port Blair in the Middle and Diglipur in the North. The Nicobar islands are essentially off limits to foreigners. The Andamans are very extensive in area. Exploration is not possible in many places. Wherever the famed rare and endangered Pinanga andamanensis is located would need to be researched and probably special permits would need to be obtained . As the tourist road is now closed, access is more difficult tahn in the past. Regulations appear to be quite strictly policed. Here is the airport, very unusual. An A380 has landed there but in some years the middle of the runway can be 1 metre under water. Its a very i…

Ann Norton Sculpture Garden

Pedro and I did a fast check of the condition of the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden on Thursday Jan. 21,2010. This is over a week after the Jan.2-11 cold event in which no freezing temperatures were incurred but a long time-frame between the low 60'sF and approximately 35F. As reported previously, this is the longest cold event since 1940 for South Florida. We were pleasantly surprised but there were certainly issues presented to many out of the ordinary and rather Tropical specimens. Start with a Satakentia liukiuensis: A big Teddy among others in there somewhere: Ptychosperma macarthurii: A large Cocothrinax crinitia:

Last Tuesday I was out in the forest checking out a project of one of my suppliers. The area is 10,000 hecatares near the same area on an earlier thread of the ranch lunch. I thought that this E. prectoria was a beautiful sight for those that are fans of this palm. Tho get into the project they had to build a bridge across the river. This is the same river as in the ranch thread, the Jauaperi River.

Another day at work
by tropicbreeze- 23 replies

Took the camera to work today because I thought there'd be good opportunities for some interesting visuals. A lot of palms around, but only one species. Although, nearby there are another two species. Still, most of these photos are scenic. Being a windy day this Livistona inermis looks a bit windswept on this rocky ledge This one develops speckled deep dark crimson petioles. Another with orange red petioles. Although they mainly flower at the start of the wet season, they can also flower intermittently any time of year. Quite common along the rocky ridges. Not a clumping palm, but seeds often germinate close together. …

Steph and I just got back from another working vacation at our place on the big island of Hawaii and while I did plant some palms and stuff a lot of our focus was carving trails and taking out invasive plants in the back half of our acre. I was able to hack out a nice trail to the back of our property and clear out some other areas for planting. Bo again hooked me up with some VERY NICE plants and here is the list of the palms and others I was able to plant when I was'nt swinging the machete. Dypsis Decipiens 5 gal. Dypsis Oropedionis 5 gal. Dypsis Rivularis "pink crown" 1 gal. Dypsis Onilahensis 1 gal. Dypsis "clumping mystery" 1 gal. Marojejya Darianii 5 gal. 2- …

Just keeping it fresh like Palm Juice Juice! We started off at John Shearson's (epicure3) place in the Torrey Hills area of San Diego. I noticed the difference between 2 queen palms. The robust leaflet variety and the not so robust leaflets variety. I wish you could tell the difference when they're young. John's Spathodea tree was in full bloom and beautiful. I hope some of you other's with better camera got some nice shots. Some bromeliads in flower. End of summer is a great time for a palm tour. Pohonkelapa making his way back to the back yard.....or is he just posing again. ???
