Origin of "Pigafetta"
by JD in the OC- 1 reply

"Ferdinand Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães) [1480-1521] is said to have been killed by king Lapu Lapu of Mactan Island. Filipino legend glorifies Lapu Lapu as the sole killer of Magellan, mano y mano. Controversy arises when you bring up Pigafetta. Pigafetta was Magellan's official diary entry writer. He left us detailed accounts of the events in the Phillipines as well as an account of Magellan's death. Due to the fact that Magellan's position toward exploration became more of a missionary position when he reached these islands, no one knows if any historical documents were fudged to put the Spanish in a better suiting light. History for the most part accepts that it was…

Palm leaves
by Palm Guy- 0 replies

Hi all, My palm seedlings are beginning to throw yellowish leaves that are smaller than previously thrown leaves. Also, the leaf stalk is much closer to the trunk than previous leaves ie. the leaves appear to come straight out of the trunk rather than stretch. I've noticed what might be fungus gnats(these guys have chewed my seeds before). Do Fungus gnats cause this or perhaps some sort of nutritional deficiency? Thanks, Mike F

Kona find - Dypsis pilulifera or Dypsis sp. 'Orange Crush'?
by Gunnar Hillert- 8 replies
The big-box stores in Kona (Hawaii) are usually never a good place to find palms. But Lowe's seems to make a tiny bit of an effort as of late. @Dypsisdean made a recent post of a find of Dypsis mananjarensis. Today I saw this one labelled Dypsis pilulifera Orange Crush 10g / $190 ... I know this one is confusing and I am not Jeff 😉 ... so which one is this? Dypsis pilulifera Dypsis sp. 'Orange Crush' Unfortunately, I only took the following attached picture. Thanks for any hints 🙏.

Common name of Palms and confusion....
by Bill H2DB- 6 replies
I ran across this Craigslist ad this a.m. , and , well......... I am confused . Ridden hard and put up wet ? https://daytona.craigslist.org/grd/d/ridden-palm-tree/6553143713.html As I am somewhat known as a Palm person in my circles , I often am asked about variously named palms... , and often , I can't discern what Palm that they may be asking about . Just to get the asking person to describe the fronds , to at least narrow it down to Palmate or Pinnate is a trial . I have really backed off a great deal , of late , as I age ..

Dypsis Sp "Bef" viable seed
by steve99- 3 replies
My Dypsis sp "Bef" produced its first lot of seeds in the summer of 2013. A gave batches of seeds to several local palmtalk members but nobody had success in germinating them. Last summer (2014) it produced zero seeds - absolutely nothing! This year looks like it could be the year I finally get some viable seed? Well, it's looking promising so far.

Bismarck and other survivers.

My newly planted palms had to deal with a direct hit of hurricane Newton two weeks ago. The hundred mph winds, salt and rain wiped out most of my leafy plants. Palms survived. The Bismarck has grown 4 new fronds in a week, one tough plant. Should be a beast soon. Lantania is recovering nicely. Established cocos are unfazed. Gotta love palms.

Buying Palmseeds in San Diego?
by Ciczi in Sweden- 3 replies
Hello all. My husband is going to San Diego on a business trip next week and I am of course deadly jealous. I would so love to go but his company won't allow it. But I would like to know if theres a place where he can buy some palmseeds for me? Where to go and what species should he buy? If they are not winterhardy they can not be to big because I have to store them somewhere during the winter. And while he is over there what else to buy? I'm thinking along the line of clothes or shoes for our son. Any special stores he should look for? In Sweden autumn definitely has arrived. It's windy, chilly and raining horizontally. Right now my thermometer shows 5,6 degree…

Palms that do good in your native soil
by ruskinPalms- 2 replies

I was wondering what does well in your area with little to no care. i.e. what should be used as public plantings since you know they won't be cared for? What can you grow with little to no supplemental watering (very important in this day and age of water restrictions) and little to no fertilizer? I am going out on limb here because I don't really know the answer for west central Florida. I am sure there will be a lot of disagreement with my list, but I am trying to learn The native soil here is pretty much sand with very little organic material. Lower lying swampy areas can have more organic material and moisture, but most homes and public areas are not in the swamp…

I know how rare this little guy is. Can't wait to put it into the ground, but I have to be patient and be happy it just put out a new leaf, in its 4 inch pot. Has anyone seen these in habitat in Madagascar? I've seen the pictures that Jeff Searle took, a few years back, and recently was beyond fortunate to see the group at Jeff Marcus's. aloha

Holy Palms for So-Cal -- three isn't really enough
by DoomsDave- 6 replies

Trioderob's Holy Trinity post got me thinking (an accomplishment, I would note). He suggested Jubes, Bizzies and Copernicias. That's a great start, and worthy plants, but I can think of many many holies in addition to the ones T-rob mentioned. My criteria is that they be large, rare and spectacular. Corypha umb. (as of this week) Dypsis decipiens Arenga pinnata Parajube tor-tor Jubaeopsis caffra Dypsis leptocheilos Dypsis lastelliana mountain type Roystoneas, especially oleracea, if you can get them to grow A multitude of mules: J X B, J X Syagrus, many more Ravenea xerophyla Hedyscepe canterburyana There, I'll stop. I'm sure others will be abl…

I'd like to know what type of palm tree this AND what is wrong with it? As you can see in the picture off to the right, it has some weird yellowish-green stuff growing off the trunk. Or, is that normal? Can someone please ID both issues? Thanks! I think it's some kind of a fan palm, but what type? * Yes, I'm indeed a beginner at this kinda stuff

I believe if you look at the middle of this house, you will see a certain variety of Palm indigenous to Australia and New Guinea. I appologize that it is not as clear as it should be:
