Greetings everyone, I have found a great offer online for Pacific Green coconut seedlings, but they’re a variety that I’m not very well informed on. Can someone tell me what’s the minimum temperature // weather conditions in general that this species will tolerate? Will I be able to grow this in Southern Texas?

I am going to add a new Shade House area to put my larger palms in to grow (5g to 15g) What would be better to use 40 percent or 50 percent. And the most compatible for most species growing here in California. It will be appox 20ft by 24ft in size. Thanks Curt

Just picked up a little kentia the other day i plan to have outdoors. Should it be fine Climate wise? it is close to a northeast facing wall and has canopy in forms of a threebranch with lot of leafs making a airpocket to make it slightly warmer in those cold winter nights here in the desert. From experience how cold hardy are they, i know it says 25f but what is your experience? Do Kentias Grow much faster if grown in open soil compared to a pot or are they allmost equally Slow outdoors? How slow approximently are these palms when living outside Thanks!

I'm going to start with my Metroxylon vitiense. It's just under 7' (2m+) overall and is a couple of months short of 4 years in the ground from 1 gallon. In January 2018 it went through a 2 hour freeze (down to 30F/-1C) with minimal leaf damage. But all the leaves were well aged at the time. During the coldest night this past winter (34F/+1C) it had just put out a fresh pink leaf in the morning prior, and this new leaf was moderately damaged at that temp.

I saw these on one of my three potato chip palms. When I looked at the other two, I saw similar but shriveled brown remains. Any guess at the sexes? Sorry, only my phone for photos this trip.

Archontophoenix leaf colour

I transplanted two separate Archo clumps from my old garden that popped up from the mother trees there and since coming to their new home they have grown very well and are showing more colour on new leaves. They live in a fairly shaded area, although in summer there's a fair chunk of sun on them. Thought I'd share.

Night Moves/Mercury Vapor
by sur4z- 3 replies

When I purchased my house there were in ground copper housed mercury vapor lights. I love the soft green hue the lights make. As I added and subtracted and moved stuff around on the property, I wanted to add more of the same upligjting only to find no one was selling this type anymore...everything was LED which makes white light. I work in white light all day and I did not want more in my garden. So after a long search I found a company in Texas that still made the lights and I ordered them immediately. Here are few shots from the other night: C.macrocarpa T.radiata Ponytail and Stag horn (Elk horn?) A.catechu dwarf po…

Dear all, In the North of Gran Canaria, (Canary Islands, Spain) we have discovered some fossils structure of Phoenix canariensis palm. Attached a sample of part of this fossil. We have found some structures, similar to pneumatophores, and therefore, we need to document about the anatomy and ecophysiology of pneumatophores in Phoenix canariensis. We are looking for information about Phoenix canariensis palm trees growing in waterlogged sites and in ponds or lakes. We know that the Canarian palm may have occupied a large belt overall the Western Canary Island before the European conquest and before groundwater pumping started; Can anyone help us? T…

Washingtonia in the Santa Margarita River
by azurebird- 9 replies

This is a giant Washingtonia that is growing wild in the Santa Margarita River in Fallbrook near my ranchita. It is located at the base of Gavilan Mountain. Its seed must have traveled down the river in some flood, maybe the big one in 1993. I estimate its height now at 80 to 100'. I am not sure if it is a pure robusta or a filifera hybrid. It is kind of neat to see how they look completely untouched. The eco diehard environmentalists want to remove all non native vegetation from the rivers and riparian areas but it isn't like these palms are spreading like wildfires and I say, keep them and leave them alone. A beautiful addition in my book. My wife planted a small w…

Is this a Butia?
by Fouquieria- 6 replies

Since I'm such a novice with palm trees... Even though it was neglected, it had outstanding color...very similar to a Bismarckia...even though the pic doesn't show it. Anyway, it had tons of little Persimmon-looking fruit on the ground, so I got a little baggy of them. This was near my old house from the 80's on Meridian, just off College near Lemon Grove, CA.

Rat Removal Leads to Coconut Palm Explosion
by Rick Kelley- 6 replies
Or How to Kill a Million Coconut Palms. Coconuts are not native to Hawaii and can become weeds. This was illustrated in a powerful way on the small Palmyra atoll south of Hawaii. Coconuts had found their way to Palmyra long ago. About ten years ago the Nature Conservancy set out to eradicate the introduced black rats that cause so much ecological damage on tropical islands. They were successful. There were two unanticipated results. On the good side, the mosquitoes vanished. Turns out the rats were the only mammal supplying blood. On the bad side, the population of coconut palms exploded. They threatened to crowd out every other plant on the atoll, not what th…

Pritchardia ID in question #1 P. hardyi
by WaianaeCrider- 5 replies
Found an old tag while cleaning under one of my Hawaiian Pritchardias. The three in question now were planted as 1 gallon plants in 1998 so that's 22 years in the ground. These pictures here are supposed to be P. hardyi. I have Don Hodel's book and this one seems to fit right except for this "The blades, glossy green above (OK) and CONSPICUOUSLY silvery gray to nearly white below (NOT) Plants came from Kapoho Palms on the Big Island and I'm beginning to think this and some of my others are hybrids from a botanical garden. Tried to upload a few others but got that evil 200 error message.
