Climbing and trimming the ole coconut!
by TikiRick- 23 replies
- 2.8k views
As we all know, we don't spike tall palms to clean them. These tall coconuts have gotten too tall for me to manage on my own, so I found this great Jamaican guy who uses a ladder, ropes, and lowers the big seed to the ground. He respects that I care for my palms and that I don't want all of my understory crushed. Great guy!

Sorpranos for the Asparagus sprengeri
by DoomsDave- 4 replies
Howdyall: I have some asparagus sprengeri that have gotten loose among the palms. I want to kill them, hence the Sorpranos slant . . . . "Sprengies" are members of the lily family, so tricopyr won't work in them. Roundup isn't very effective, either. Yeah, yeah, I know, I could uproot those things, but getting all the roots is like eradicating virulent cancer. A leaf-to-root herbie would be nice. Any thoughts, anyone? Thanks Dave

Tricopyr herbicide
by DoomsDave- 4 replies
- 2.3k views
Howdyall: I have [oedipal obscene gerund] Vinca major [expletive expletive expletive] in some of my palms, etc. Roundup (glyphosate) works, but it whacks palms that get a dose. Some, like Dypsis baronii, are quite sensitive. (How do you THINK I know? ??? ) I schlepped to Big Orange in the Big Orgy and got some "Bayer Advanced Power Force Brush Killer Plus" Which contains tricopyr. I note that the directions indicate that it's much more effective at killing dicots, like Vinca than monocots, such as grasses. No specific advice as to palms. I'm NOT going to shoot my palms head to toe with the stuff, but I'd sure appreciate any experiences, cautionary tales…

Dividing Chamaerops?
by NorCalWill- 2 replies
I figure the answer is probably no, but thought I'd ask anyway. I have a small (just over a foot of trunk) Chamaerops and it has quite a few suckers that have maybe 6-8 inch "trunks" or less, and was wondering if those suckers can be removed and rooted without damaging the main plant. Obviously you need to get as much root as possible, but how much is enough, and is it even worth doing?

Palm leaves
by Palm Guy- 0 replies
Hi all, My palm seedlings are beginning to throw yellowish leaves that are smaller than previously thrown leaves. Also, the leaf stalk is much closer to the trunk than previous leaves ie. the leaves appear to come straight out of the trunk rather than stretch. I've noticed what might be fungus gnats(these guys have chewed my seeds before). Do Fungus gnats cause this or perhaps some sort of nutritional deficiency? Thanks, Mike F

Are these seed healthy?
by fiji jim- 3 replies

Hi all I ordereded a 100 each of 2 var of A.ves seed in April. They were advertised as sprouted. None of mine arrived with sprouts but were received about three weeks from ordering. I treated them as I do all seed and not one has germinated. I read that these have short viability. I did the usual soaking in water for a couple of days and planted them in the same manner as all other seed. I also cut one open to check it out. However all other seed that I have cut open have been pure white or cream inside. Is this the right look for these seed or were they no good on arrival ? Jim

In order to practice uploading pictures, I thought I would (try) and share an image of a Bismarkia that I took in Anguilla in the Caribbean. For reference, the man in the picture is about 6'-3" tall. http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff297/r...60/IMG_4529.jpg In case it doesn't work, I'll try listing the manual link here (and if so, please, someone enlighten me on how to correctly post.....yes, I've read FAQ but must have a low IQ)> http://i239.photobucket.com/albums....1034319

The landscaping for my ranch entry is finally complete. Who can correctly identify all 5 of the palms used on each side? Hint: look at my signature, that should narrow the possibilities down significantly.

by DoomsDave- 2 replies

My place is clay, and in some places it's Clay from H*ll, in others it's clay loam, and the loam rocks, but some things thrive in H*ll, too. Clay loam: Pritchardtia schautteri, hillebrandtii, lanaiensis; Dypsis leptocheilos, baronii, "fakey ambositrae"; Roystonea oleracea, regia; Rhapis, period; Ptychosperma elegans; Chamadorea radicalis, plumosa, "cordoba" tepijilote, elegans, ernest-augustii, oblongata, seifritzii; Caryota urens and mitis; Howea belomoreana and forsteriana, Hedyscepe, Rhopalistylus . . . . Down in H*ll PHOENIX! reclinata, canariensis, roebelenii, rupicola, Archontophoenix cunninghamiana There are others but I'm tired. . . . . Bring on yo…

Since there's a different thread about who received the September 2007 issue, i.e. 51(3), of PALMS, and when they received it, might be appropriate to give everybody something else to look forward to: With the Dec. 2007 issue, 51(4) of PALMS, which should arrive exactly three months from now, IPS members will also receive a real nice Christmas bonus: a 52 page supplement, named "A Review of the Genus Pritchardia" by Donald R. Hodel. Plenty of color photos, and as the title states, a complete review of Pritchardia, including the description of TWO new Pritchardia species. Got my pots on blocks, now what?
by www.dadluvsu.com- 18 replies

I took Jerry's advice and worked on getting my pots a little air and circulation... My back is shot for the weekend, Thanks Jerry, I should let you explain it to the ladies... I got a bunch of the containers up off the ground and spread out a little bit with the help of 4 truck loads of concrete blocks. In another topic it was suggested to use a "wick" to lower the water table in the containers... and promote drainage. I would like to do that to the containers that feel heavy or the ones that have plants that show signs of dampening off... Question is, what is a good wicking material? Old t-shirts? Rope? What kind of material best suits the operation? I guess anyth…

Palms that HATE clay soil?
by DoomsDave- 17 replies
- 6.1k views
Howdyall: My place has some pretty serious clay, in places. Not enough for brickwork, but impermiable enough that a foot (30 cm) of water dumped into a hole won't drain, but evaporate instead. Some palms hate clay, in my observation. One appears to be Chamadorea glaucifolia. Whoo-ee, rocket in sandy soil, but rotten stump in clay. (Cousin C. plumosa rocks in clay . . . ) Another appears to be Ravenea glauca. Just like C. glaucifolia. Anyone else have any anecdotes, evidence, etc? Bring it on . . . da ve
