Clean Palm Seeds the Easy Way
by Alicehunter2000- 3 replies
- 1.4k views
After months of searching (most people didn't even know what I was asking about) I discovered that product was a pectinase enzyme. From what I was told the enzyme breaks down the cellular structure of fruit but wouldn't harm other materials such as seeds or plant material. In Florida this enzyme is still used to separate the orange seeds from the fruit in mass quantities. In North Carolina it has been used to make apple juice. By using the enzyme, more juice can be produced from each apple because there is no wasted material, except for the seeds, to throw away. I thought I would check all this for myself so I procured some enzyme and conducted a few experiments. I put so…

I wanted to give some of my plants a little nitrogen boost so I bought a bag of soluable calcium nitrate (calcinit by Yara). When I got home I realized there were no mixing instructions on the package. Does anyone know at what ratio should I mix this with water. Thanks in advance

While I was at the Nursery this morning I heard some screaming coming from the shade house...What I discovered was disturbing...So I took some pictures so I could share... There was scale from the base to tips of the leaves...these bugs were feasting on these kentia...It seems that Kentia are more prone to scale than others...Is that true?

Old Areca vestiaria
by The Palm Nut- 3 replies
Over the years I have had my vestiaria flower but the seeds never got to the mature stage. In all cases it was winter or prior to winter that the seeds started to form. In all cases the seeds simply browned off and died, but this winter something is different and the seeds are hanging on. Its been the worst winter in years and for some reason this winter the seed want to hang on. It makes no sence. If you look closely at the photos you can see how part of the flower head has died off but the part with the seeds are still alive. If these seeds do go full term I will try to germinate them. Cheers Mike

Thought I'd take a couple of mid-winter pics of the garden. Already 60° out there this morning at 10:00AM. Seeing yesterday hit 69° and we are running a few degrees above that, 75° would not be out of the question. Looking like an early spring more and more.

Bismarckias during wet season
by Really full garden- 3 replies
- 1.3k views
We are in our wet season now and I have noticed that my normally white/ silver bismarckias have turned slightly green. This is especially noticeable in the emerging leaves. Our hours of daylight are longer now and it rains only at night I think Bismarckias like some bromeliads look better when stressed slightly- less water ,lower humidity. Any opinons?

Hello everyone! I read somewhere in some palm planting instruction to use a rooting hormone ( Indole-3-butyric acid, IBA) water solution to water a newly planted palm in the ground outside to stimulate new roots growth, etc. Today I planted a 2 yrs old washy palm in the ground, should I also water it with the IBA water solution as suggested or not? And if yes, how many liters (gallons) of IBA water solution (IBA concentration 5g/kg) per plant so that not to kill it? Thanks

My wallichia is flowering so I got up on the ladder to inspect the flowers as the bees we’re fairly active so I brushed my hand in and around the flowers along with a artist’s brush in hope of some seeds setting as no luck yet with viable seeds this may be the last chance I get as it has flowered twice before

What are these bugs?
by Tyrone- 3 replies
Does anyone know what these bugs are? I think one of them is the larval stage of the one with wings. I've watched these bugs a bit and they seem to signal each other with there big antenna. The ones without wings jump and they can jump a great distance and are quite difficult to catch. I've had these bugs for the last couple of years but this year I have heaps of them. What do you guys reckon. Does anyone know what these are? Best regards Tyrone

Being stupid
by Ciczi in Sweden- 3 replies

Sometimes you're being very short-sighted. The following story is a case of that. Thinking about where to put my seedlings down and checking my windowsills - realising that they are crowded. So I was thinking about throwing some houseplants out when it finally hit me. You have a 400W growing light in your basement and 2 palms that get regularly watered and fertilized. What better place to put down some seeds of Chamaerops humilis? (in the same pot as one of the palms) Proper light, good temperature and I can forget all about them getting too much water or none water at all since I wont forget watering my palms. Thank God I realised this before throwing some of my h…

I believe this is a picture of a Butia that I took in the City of Poti, Georgia (the Republic of; not the State of) back in 2008. Can anyone confirm if it is, in fact, a Butia; and if so, what species? The dark green color of this palm really intrigued me and I had to take a shot. Any assistance you can provide in identifying this palm would be greatly appreciated. Rich

Sick Phoenix, need input
by Darold Petty- 3 replies

One of my friends has a mature Phoenix canariensis with about 20 feet of trunk. Her arborist noticed discoloration in the cut leafbases. A pathology service was engaged with the results positive for Phytophthora and Nalanthamala (Gliocladium) vermoeseni. The pathology report recommended "fosetyl-aluminum" applied to the crown for Phytophthora. The pathology report recommended "thiophanate-methyl" , "propiconazole", or "fludioxinil" for the Nalanthamala. Can anyone tell me a brand name on the packaging for these chemicals ? Thanks !

Hey! I just got a young roystonea Regia given that it’s the warmest season of the year here in Mexico City, but I feel insecure about the future of it. I just planted it in a larger pot, and know of a few roystoneas around my area that manage to survive, but it seems like they all got here as adults. Our summers are rainy with highs between 25 and 27 Celsius and lows between 12 and 15 Celsius, with our hottest season being right now (March - June) with highs between 27-32°C and lows between 12-15°C & our coldest season with highs between 18-25°C - lows between 4°C - 9°C, rarely below 5°C. What do you think? here’s the plant & some of the roystoneas I’ve fou…
