Repotting damage?
by newtothis- 5 replies
- 2.2k views
I recieved a chambeyronia macrocarpa seedling, on its 3rd leaf, about 8" high and roots about the same 8". It came wrapped in moss and when i repotted it and pushed down on the soil to compact it around the roots, I pushed too close to the seed and heard a "crackle?". I think I pulled it partly off but not all the way. It's still green today 1 day later but will it die?

Palm Tree Soils
by gsytch- 5 replies
I seem to be struggling with my soil mixes on growing palms. I live in Tampa Bay, zone 9b. I grow lots of exotics, begonias, bromeliads, orchids, etc so I am experienced, but getting the palm soil mix right seems to be a chore...seedling 3gal or larger. If I was to mix my own, what would you include? I do have pine bark mulch fines available, which I use, plus charcoal (fine and med), perlite, vermiculite, no sand, and of course various peats/potting mixes heavy on peats....Greg

Chamadorea fragrans and bad drainage
by DoomsDave- 5 replies
Howdyall: I have a little clump of C. fragrans, which was rescued from the open garden and placed into a pot. In the garden, the leaves had that unmistakable folded look that said "Give me more water!" In the pot, no better, till I stuck it in a big saucer I kept full. Now, much better. How about the rest of you?

Disorders and Diseases of Ornamental Palms field guide

I made good use of my member discount at Fairchild gardens and got this handy small book with laminated pages. This is perfect to carry with me on my farm and help identify issues. Yes, I know this stuff is online but I admit that I still love books and will put this to good use! In fact, currently it is raining and I am in my hammock in the porch enjoying this pocket sized book. I know Fairchild's gift shop mail orders too.

What's Eating My Palm's Leaves?
by nitsua0895- 5 replies
I'm mainly having problems with my Washingtonia Robusta and Royal palm seedlings but whatever insect is causing this damage also seems to love my African Rhino Horn banana tree. I suspect it's the very small black caterpillars I see on my palms and banana trees. They also seem to create some sort of web like a spider because they hang in mid-air when I knock them off. I'm sure this is a very common insect but has anyone else had a problem with these? And what's the best thing I could do to prevent them?

Date Palm Seed Depth
by Xerarch- 5 replies
- 1.3k views
I am currently germinating some Medjool Date seeds, I have done this many times in the past and these are very easy with every method I have used. I recently read in the "Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms" that date seeds should be planted at a minimum depth of 6 inches due to their remote germination. 6 inches? I have never planted one that deep! I usually only put them maybe a couple inches down and haven't had a problem, I haven't put them shallow for any scientific reason or anything, I just didn't figure they needed to be any deeper. Anyway, should I go ahead and put these deeper? Anyone have experience or a good reason to put these at any particular depth? Thanks…

Looking for a couple of palm ID's
by redant- 5 replies

The second palm looks like a Chamaedorea, but I don't recall any Chamaedorea seeds, not that that means much. The first I have no idea, I don't think it's clumping, just a bunch of seedlings living together in sin.

Sadly my P hillebrandii must go.

It has been a lovely statement for about 10 years now, but out there in the front in the wind it takes a beating such that it has never been stable in the ground. The soil is sandy and it is on a sandstone rock shelf, so in every big wind it rocks around more and more. The other palms out there got their feet in but this poor girl just can't do it. We have been propping it up for a few years now with big rocks but it is still too loose to be safe. Oh well, life, always moving on.

Indoor palm questions
by newtothis- 5 replies
My new addiction has moved indoors and we picked up a 6' Ravenea rivularis at Lowes for $12. I was reading davesgarden and half users report its a great indoor palm and the other half state it dies after 2 years inside, gets infested by mites, and is much better outside. The tag on the plant reads "magnificent palm for indoor feature" if placed within 6 feet of a window. Half of reports state to never let it dry out between watering and others report let the first 2" dry then water. By the way today they had a hyophorbe bottle, around 5' tall, for almost $200, I wanted it sooo bad but sounded kinda steep.

What's wrong with my Pindo palm? :(
by PashkaTLT- 1 follower

Hello guys, My Pindo Palm is dying or already dead. It spent the whole winter in my "palm room" with additional powerful artificial lightning and a humidifier during the driest months, and it had been doing fine, but about a month ago I noticed it started to look worse, kinda drier maybe, and it started to drink less water. All my pots have good palm soil and good drainage, and I also test the soil for moisture level to decide whether I need to water the plant and how much to water it. We went on vacation for a couple of weeks, I watered all the plants on the day of our departure and then on the day of our arrival, and I was shocked to see how bad the …
